I'm not into cars like people here, but if I wanted something good and reliable, I would look towards a Toyota Avensis / Corolla. Lot of Avensis cars around at the minute, everyone I know is delighted with how they need very little maintenance. Even my brother, who is quite useless and never maintains his car, has had no problems with his, and he bought it at about 110k miles for 3,200 IIRC.

Another friend has one from new and it had done 78k mile before he even took it in for it's first service and the service was all that was needed to pass the NCT.

Lots of people will recommend the Octavia here too. It's a very popular car.
