Kit car, what's the fuss? She hardly made it out of toothpicks or toilet roll inserts

I presume its a Kitcar. Hardly groundbreaking.

Looks like a few here didn't read the article:rolleyes:

    It's worth £25,000 now,hardly kit car price.

Impressive work for a woman, even if she's an Air Engineering Officer.I wouldn't attempt it.

Was waiting to get pulled up on the slightly sexist tone of my last post, but most women I know barely know how to put fuel in their cars let alone rebuild one.

Fair play to her but she's in the minority......I echo zerks sentiments.

    Hard hat on......incoming:D

So male makes a kit car and he is called an idiot.

Female makes a kit car and she is awesome.

For me it's just a kit car and by the looks of it the only things that are from original is steering wheel and speedo dials.

Sorry... I am not being sexist here, I am being fair and treating this as equal.

Big deal. I turned my ford fiesta into a field once. Got no praise at all but a summons from the guards and a bill from the farmer for wrecking 20 metres of fence.

Who reckons it's worth that, apart from the telegraph?

Even so a kit could be worth that, some originals are hitting 6 figures I think

For some strange reason I really like that one!
And I'm not mad into Porsche or Beetle.

Looks like you read the article and failed to understand it.
She took the chassis from a beetle - the body unbolts from a bettle to leave behind a structurally sound floorpan / chassis. They are commonly used for kitcar builds for this reason.
What makes you think its not a kit? It said she fitted the new body to the beetle chassis.
Nothing special about this other than the fact that its a woman and she then used it for her wedding. Prices on these things vary depending on quality of the kit used and the final build quality. They are a pretty common kit build.

I don't know whether that's a (smart) comment because it's a kit car or because a woman built it.....

Irrespective, it's a feat to be applauded - built one yourself...?

As for the quality of it - given she's an Engineer in the HM Navy, I'd be fairly confident it's not a backyard lashup - HMS is known for many things, and they do know how to put stuff together.....

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

The article just plays on the fact that she's not a bearded bloke and suggests that shes done something unique. Not to take from what she's done, but isn't it just a matter of buying all the bits from a supplier and putting it all together?

My comment was in response to the OP who responded to me and claimed it was not a kit car and pretty much stated it couldnt be ask it was worth 25k.
It is to be applauded and something I hope to do (not the porsche) but the OP came back with what I felt was a very smart remark particularily as it seems he doesnt realise that this type of kit car exists.
So to answer your question, its neither a smart comment because a woman built it or because its a kitcar. It was a response to the OP who I feel had the wrong end of the stick and when this was pointed out, he pretty much scoffed at the original response.

No doubt that lady is well capable.

Its worth 25K because the NEWSPAPER said it was I take it?

thats is seriously awesome, fair play to her. must have took alot of work and money

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,241 ✭✭✭baalthor

These have been around for decades. A guy I knew in college in the 90s was going to build one but I don't think he ever got around to it.
Some people laughed at the concept ...

Surely that would be a Beetle with a Boxter body?
    All show, no go.

The original porsches were just beetles with different bodies.

Looks like a Chesil Speedster kit...

    http://www.chesil.biz/Chesil_Prices_K.htm

Fair dues to her. There's lot's of kits available based on the air cooled Beetle chassis ...911's,Lambo,beech buggy etc etc.

Just ask a neighbour of mine-he has to take his gf's car to put fuel in it for her as she still can't do it despite driving for years.
Couldn't imagine her building a car be it a kit car or not.

In response to a couple of posts,I wasn't being smart.Just that it's a good bit of work from the woman in question to go to all that effort to build what in fairness looks like a very nice car.
I think it's a bit unfair on her efforts for some to say "ah sure,it's only a kit car",the thing still needs to be built and it's not like lego.

The car cost £200! Its valued now at £25,000. No idea if it would get that if it went on sale...
No indication of what she put into it, but as colm_mcm said, originals are making over £100,000!
