What car do you wish was available to buy new today ?

The more I look at modern cars, the more I wish for someone to be a bit 'retro' and release a car like this:

200 bhp petrol, rwd, lsd, bare minimum of non-essentials, light, 4-cyl engine.
It would sell like hot cakes.

Now where have I seen one of those again ?
    Bmw-M3-E30.jpg

The MX-5 has all the underpinnings of it, why not stick a saloon bodyshell on it?

So if you wanted a car built to your spec, what would you ask for ?

Alfa 166 with the 2.4JTDM engine. Otherwise the BMW 8-series or maybe E39 5 series. There's so many!

    In fact, any cosworth.

    Talbot T-150

I really wish there were more proper retro style cars out there. Things like the new mini, Fiat 500, new beetle don't count at all.

If they only updated the engine of an old car and left the rest alone, made the interior out of the same materials, original tiny steering wheel instead of a big lump of Chinese plastic with an air bag in it and plastered with controls for the "InfoTainment" system

Haha. Well that's half the point of it really. It's brash and it's big. It was designed more as a Touring car really, so reflects that in the road version, which is pretty damn rare these days.

I would agree that it's somewhat overstated, but I think thats part of the charm. I'd still have one tomorrow if possible. :D

    Absolutely agree!
I was in Stockholm this year for a few days and the mad metal you see on the roads there is unreal, after a few days you stop looking at Audi R8's, BMW 6 series convertibles and only look out for the more mental American muscle cars and convertible tanks, Ferraris, etc...
But I did see one Renault 4 and realised I haven't seen one in years!
2CV's are common as muck in comparison, but you never see one of those.

    As for my wishes:

The 1977 Mercedes 450SEL bored out to 6.9 liters of madness:

    benz11.jpg

And the MKI Scirocco, even rarer than the R4:

Easy, an Alfasud with power steering that doesn't rot.

The only car that came close to a Mini in terms of enjoyment.

I miss old cars quite a lot, stuff you'd see in he early 90s. Remember the cars around that era on the roads?

They don't make them as exciting as they used to :(

bushings use to wear out making the wheels splay out.. my mates dad use to hav a few of them (405s) as did a few others. he got a brass bushing made up, drilled out two holes and fitted grease nipples. just keep them greased at each service and they would last a lifetime

Have you seen the swap the american lads have done, the 5.0 V8 and manual swap from the E39 M5 in to an E38?
A bi-turboed v12 750 or B12 would be as close as you could get.

Not really what the thread is about but others are putting forward fantasy combinations so here's mine!

Octavia Combi with VW Golf R32 engine, DSG and AWD. Now there's a Q car.
I'd imagine it could be done quite easily too if you could find a donor Golf.
