    Hi,

Im in the process of bulding a gaming pc. So I'm Just checking would I be better to go wired or wireless.

I live in a Extension out my back aprox 20 feet from the house where my router is situated.

I have powerling plugs out there( which send the internet signal through the electric cabling in your home) So i'm able to use ethernet connection only devices out there.

Here are the speeds I get while out there.

    wireless 32ms ping : jitter 12ms
download 16.21(flucuating all the time) mbps upload 2.70 mbps

    wired through powerline--- 50ms ping:jitter 51ms
Download 16.64mbps(flucuating though slightly more stable than wireless) upload 2.74 mbps

It says packet loss test unavailble for some reason

Would these speeds be suitable for online gaming. If so which would be better ?

    Thank you for reading.

I'm not expert but both of them seem extremely good. They both have a low ping and very good download and upload speeds. Are you on a fibre optic connection? i could only dream of getting an upload speed like that.

You don't have much of a choice really... wireless has a lower ping..

Yeah its fibre optic upc. Think its 25mb. My bro plays his xbox and when my other bro or mam is on laptop in can sometime lose connection . Will that happen with my pc. Or when he is playing xbox and im playing pc. Will we both be losing connection all the time

Also If I upgraded my broadband too 50mbps or 100 mbps would I see a significant benefit ?

Is someone doing heavy downloading/torrenting when the net cuts out, or does it happen when multiple people are trying to access it?

I don't think so, the ping is alright it wont get faster just because you go to the higher packages... if wireless is flaky then go homeplug

@yoyo: there could be two or three laptops on the wifi when this happens. Its usually when there is at least two others. No heavy downloading. As little bros wouldnt know what torrents are. The only thing I can think of is one my bros uses a app called teamviewer and xampp. Not sure if they would use up the connection( bandwith is it called?)

@asif When you say I have not got much of a choice and that my ping is alright. This mean These speeds arent great ?

Also what advantages is there having 100mbps over 25mbps.

Do you have this modem by any chance:
    DPC2203.jpg.
I had similar issues with this modem, random disconnects but mainly happened when heavy downloading, the modem didn't reboot or anything, just pages could not be displayed errors (Downloads still worked fine). Since upgrading to the 50meg the problems disappeared (due to a new modem) so I'm convinced the modems firmware has an issue. It lasted for ages and worked fine, so I'm guessing a ota upgrade screwed it up!

There is a setting on that Modem/Router called IP Flood Protection, try turning that off. Instructions here

I don't know if these are your local pings or external ISP pings. Go to the command prompt and type ping 4.2.2.2 or ping 8.8.8.8

My pings are 50ms & 25ms, that's with a 1Gbit wired connection to my wireless router. You'll probably get something similar but there is very little you can do to get pings down - it's dependant on your ISP and if you are using wireless or homeplug at home, a wired connection would be ideal but not always practical.

Only how much you can download and how fast it comes down will change being on the higher package. Pings will probably stay the same as it's based on your location and connection at the exchange.

    4.2.2.2 takes 33ms and 8.8.8.8 takes 15ms

Good fast times, perfect for gaming. Even my slower pings would be OK, for gaming it really comes down to connecting to servers as close to you as possible - and therefore a lower ping to the server IP address...

Thanks asif2011. just wanted to make sure my broadband was suitable for gaming.

Would having a bigger connection ie 100mpbs help the part where if i have a few pc on wifi the xbox gets cut off. If i got 100mbps would this happen less often ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 185 ✭✭asif2011

Sure yeah, but if someone is torrenting then all that'll happen is that'll use more. You need throttle anything like bittorent. But if someone is using the RTE Player or something then the 100Mb connection will allow more throughput and more users on at the same time...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 124 ✭✭oorrccaa

I get ye. torrent will use the connection if theres more there. What does throttle mean. Set the bandwith torrent apps are using ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 185 ✭✭asif2011

Yeah throttle it (set the maximum speed it can use) as 50Mb download 2Mb upload or somthing similar. UPC is 100Mb download 7Mb upload. You want to keep as much upload throughput as possible - your uploads are important when playing games, and torrenting takes as much upload as it can and really slows down your gaming pings. Ideally you wouldn't be torrenting at the same time but if you do, throttle it.

25mb is more than capable of dealing with two gamers and a video stream. The issue would have to be the modem/router. 50mb would solve that with a new thompson cable router.
