Saw this earlier, they are a scary people.

Jamie Oliver had to deal with a lot of this crap when he did that show in the states, they class bread as a veg as well!!!

Cool now I can have five pizzas a day as well as three sensible meals and the weight will ROLL off me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53 ✭✭aquarian_fire

I saw that earlier on. It's actually mad. There's not even enough tomato in the pizza sauce to count as a fruit.

    Awesome! Easy vegetable servings!

So US congress has decided pizza is now a fruit.....
There's not even enough tomato in the pizza sauce to count as a fruit.

I think everyone is just being reactionary for the sake of it.

If there is the same amount of veg/fruit on a pizza as one serving, then why shouldn't it count? It's meals that contain vegetables, not pizza is a vegetable.
It doesn't mean that all the salt, fat, carbs are ignored. And that it is a "health food. It's just a bad food that has a serve of veg.

Some posts were joking, like yours, but others were probably serious.
Besides, I was talking more about the article and its shock piece.
It will be on Joe Duffy next.

Well when they are manipulating the laws to keep junk food on the school menus I think that is kind of a problem no ?

I don't think people here aren't being reactionary for the sake of it. I mean really, pizza being listed as a vegetable? It's beyond ludicrous, and you just *know* that there ARE people out there who will use it as another delusionary scapegoat. But you're right, the media are probably just all over it because they know that it makes for great Joe Duffy sensationalism.

You know and I know that one serving of veg on a pizza does not a healthy food make, and you and I know that one pizza in a week full of clean eating is not going to undo all the hard work, but it's the message that this sends out that's so frustrating - the message to all the people who don't know better. It's just disappointing.

The point was that it counts towards the 5 a day, not that Pizza is inherently a fruit...obviously. And yes, of course, it's not healthy, and it's nothing to do with carbs/fats/etc - just that Pizza is deemed acceptable to count as one of the five recommended a day, which other fast foods would not. Don't really see the problem....

so 5 pizzas a day is ok too

It's not the pizza, it's the sauce on a pizza.

If you're going to eat that much, better 5 pizzas than 5 McDonalds, or Chinese Takeaways, yup. :p

But burgers often have tomatoes in them. So does alot of chinese/indian takeaway - often other veggies too.

Surely they should count as one of your 5 a day as well then by extension of your logic ??

Yes that's actually true. When I said Chinese takeaway I was thinking about the crap from there like 3-in-1s, chicken balls, prawn crackers, that sort of thing. But yes, depending on what you're eating, it would be entirely possible to have it count towards your 5 a day regardless of the overall nutritional value of the food i.e horrifically unhealthy. :)

It's such a warped logic. If I fry a battered apple covered in toffee I can claim I'm getting one of my 5 a day but the negatives far outweigh the positives.

    It's just mind boggling.

And I'm now craving a pizza at 10.14!!

    I HATE YOU AMERICA!!!!!

I'm with g'em on the message this sends. Or multiple messages.

    1. Its ok to have pizza as its a healthy food.
    2. Processed tomato sauce is as healthy as a fresh tomato.
    3. Adding 'fruit' to something bad for you cancels out the bad.
    3. American politicians, who lead one of the most powerful nations in the world, are idiots who put political gameplaying above the wellbeing of the people they represent.
    4. Never let the facts get in the way of a money making/saving scheme.
    5. Yet again, a government get to dictate what people do, even when they are clearly wrong.

From atricle: 'politicians had been lobbied heavily by the frozen food industry who didn’t want to see a major revenue stream cut off given how often pizza is found on the menus of school canteens in the US.'

what a load of horse ****

I once had a great row with my girlfriend, trying to convince her that potato is a vegetable. She's gonna love this.

Not to get too serious and have a cat picture aimed at me, but this is a disgrace. The sole reason for this is that the wheat lobby is so poweful in Washington. They lobby hard enough, with so much money they always get their way. It's the wheat lobby that basically sets the food guidlines for schools etc., no wonder they have a problem with obseity and diabetes.

Or the way you just told me that chilli coated peanuts are good for me. (Do they cancel out the Bulmers, too?):p

That reminds me of the April fool the bbc played years ago when they convinced their viewers that the spaghetti trees in Italy had a bumper crop and they showed footage of people harvesting spaghetti. :)

I think we should start lobbying to get ketchup to count as 1 of our 5 a day. Sure, why not? :P

Yeah, nobody in congress stood up and specifically declared pizza a vegetable, just like nobody in the WHO declared some fit rugby player to be obese due to their definition of BMI. I remember people going mental who heard I would gladly eat pizza for breakfast, but when I broke it down to basically being toast & cheese, tomato & sausage it was suddenly perfectly acceptable...

The only thing I found interesting was they consider tomato to be a vegetable.

    Yes, and no.
The main reason they have a problem
is that they eat way too ****ing much of it.

I agree, what I was saying is that the reason they eat too much wheat is that the wheat lobby gets the government to produce guidlines that make eating wheat the healthy option.

The above is a terribly written statement. It's early.

I understand what people are sayign about the "message" but school menus are terrible everywhere. Banning pizza would not change that. A greesy burger with fries and veg on the side would jsut fill its place.
The law that school menus have to have a serving of fruit/veg is completely pointless.

If they actualy cared about the meals in schools then the law should be that school dinners should be healthy.
Heathly could be defined as having adequate amount of carbs, protein, healthy fats where possible, no trans fats. Low salt. A variety of vitamins etc.

But they don't care. Not really. This is just there some some politician can be portrayed as being behind the "reform" when the run for congress in 5 years.
