Getting an acoustic guitar made as opposed to buying..

    Hi all,

A query if I could. I am looking at eventually getting something like a Martin 00015, solid mahogany acoustic. Now, it's roughly 1200euro to buy, so I would either be saving for it, or paying it off.
I know a guy who lives near me, who has a great reputation. He sets up guitars, and is great at it, and also builds guitars, high end obviously. I have played his acoustics and electrics, and they are off a high quality.
So I was thinking of asking him if he would be interested in building something like a Martin 00015?
In general, would it be much more if it were made by a guy like this?
I know I would be getting good quality buying a Martin off the shelf, but it would be a nice thing to have a "one off" guitar built by this guy.
Would you imagine off the top of your heads it would be more than 2000euro? If so, I think it would be unaffordable for me.......
I am thinking maybe the time and labour from just one guy would push up the costs a great deal.....as opposed to a factory making it......

I would imagine that it will be much more expensive. A mass produced guitar is always going to be cheaper and if you look at any of the big brand customs shops online, their always more expensive.

Good customs are going to cost a lot, especially acoustics. There's no harm in asking him and talking with him for a while about it, you might be able to work out a deal or compromise on specs for a cheaper price. It usually takes a long while to do a build from start to finish so you might be able to pay him some now and more on completion.

Always get a few quotes before you go for a custom instrument. just work out what spec you want first theres actually a fair bit to think about with it.

Demeyes and reniwren already wrote what I was going to :). Definitely get a full list of specs done so that the luthier has as much information to go on. That way he can give you as accurate a quote as possible.

You should definitely be able to get a quote from him even if it's just an estimate. Armed with that you should be able to decide if it's a better option than going with the Martin.
