The cynic in myself would question this idea that most people in this field are motivated mostly by the want to help people.

Fulfilling career and flexibility. A little from column A and a little from column C!

Poll should be expanded, very limited options shown. There can be many factors involved, I wanted a fulfulling career, but at the end of the day I need to live, like most people I wanted a job that will pay me well. I would not trust such a poll as the limited options appear to be setting people up.

Yes cynical but all professions are motivated by money to an extent. How many teachers would remain if you cut their geneous holidays? Yet they also want to 'help' people, in this case children.

A bit of a and c is the honest logical answer.

I'm also assuming you're talking about doctors in general, and not other health professionals - because you sure as hell don't pick a career as a biomedical scientist for the power or prestige (and most probably not for the money either!)

This thread is garbage. On average, I would expect most people in these fields to be more intelligent than myself:) This is just a fact, you can't have dangerous idiots practicing medicine. Just as it should be.

    *Why did I start this?*

I plan on using my biomedical science degree to take over the world help people...

Biomedical research is valid. I have serious respect for anybody who goes into research positions.to actually further human knowledge, not to simply line their pockets. There is quite a difference between say Faraday and some super rich CEO. You might not get super rich by going into this area, but you gain utmost credibility. The masses might not understand why those obscure research journals are so important, but then again, who cares what the man on the street thinks?:D

Doctors do research though, and there are lots of people involved in bench research that are just doing it for the paycheck. Most doctors I know have a genuine interest in helping people and sacrifice huge chunks of their life to progress that. There are easier ways of making money if that's all you're into.
