Ricky Gervais will host the golden globes for a third year running:)

Wonder how far he'll go this time?

From this tweet, pretty far. :pac:
    rickygervais Ricky Gervais
Just told Billy Crystal he'd better not use any of my holocaust or pedophile material at The Oscars. He agreed (true) pic.twitter.com/s1JWOCiy

Delighted he got it again - would be a shame if he didn't after last years performance!!

Maybe this is the year he'll take things too far, hollywood will despise him, no company will touch him, his lifes too short series will flop accordingly and Gervais will be cast into the legion of has beens?

Am I the only one who doesn't find him particularly funny?

His golden globes speech was good, but he's not original in that idea of slap stick. Anything else he's done is a bit meh.

I think it's fairly 50/50 with Gervais - alot of people I know either love him or hate him

I'm in the middle to be honest - I first started listening to his podcasts with Karl Pilkington and Steven Merchant and thought they were hilarious but haven't been too pushed on any of the stuff he's done since then....wouldn't be in a rush to any movies he's done and haven't gotten around to seeing extras yet.

Think he did a stellar job last year though.

I find him incredibly irritating tbh

    Hate Karl Pilkington too.

Have you given a listen to the podcasts?

I think Merchant is brilliant on them - he'll take on Ricky for some of the outlandish stuff he'll come out with and tbf Karl is just a bit simple so hearing Gervais and Merchant take the píss out of him is brilliant.

I listened to them while driving quite a bit and they made the journey seem much shorter because I was laughing for the majority of it.

I have, see the thing with Ricky and Co is I've given them a chance

Watched the entire series of AIA and listened to the podcasts yet all he seems to do is piss me off.

I guess he aint for me. Seems to be a bit of a Marmite type comedian

    Chuffed he got it..

.. sick of all the "he'll never host the Globes again!" after each.

    They obviously enjoy the controversy!

I'm delighted. He was brilliant last year. Took the piss out of absolutely everyone, as they deserve. He's the only reason to watch the Globes.

This will bring in huge ratings for the Golden Globes as everyone will be tuning in precisely to see how far he'll go. I would like to see him focus on being funny rather than just offensive. Hollywood celebrities are a gold mine for jokes, no need to take the easy option of just insulting them.

The best publicity for anyone in Hollywood these days is to be insulted in one of Ricky's jokes or remarks they love in Hollywood

Ricky makes the mistake of thinking that he is some great stand-up comedian because he has sold a **** load of stand-up dvds to morons and sold out huge venues. He's a good actor and writer (well he used to be) but he's a bit of a one trick pony now, and his politically incorrect schtick is becoming quite obnoxious and repetitive. I reckon if he was really challenged about it he would claim he's playing a character and that it's all in jest, but he doesn't have any of the charm of say Larry David to truly pull it off (also Larry in real life isn't the same as Larry in Curb). I think Ricky goes down well with the Hollywood crowd because he's one of them, he likes his awards ceremonies, and behind it all is in awe of hollywood people (as his brown-nosing of Johnny Depp on Graham Norton showed) and for all his so-called venom towards the crowd, it's actually quite tame. He's like an English Joan Rivers to them, except she is quite funny live.

I wasn't a huge Gervais fan when he first did them and thought he was great. Since listening to the podcasts I think he is probably my favourite comedian in that he is just a regular enough opinionated guy who doesn't really let fame get to his head and puts the overly PG Hollywood in it's place.

Himself and Steve are great writers too their work has provided me with so many laughs, here's the latest and possibly greatest:

I do like him as a writer but only when he isnt the central character.
Like the podcasts, idiot abroad and lifes too short and that are fantastic. But he himself just rubs me up the wrong way with his other stuff, not really too sure why.
I know its off topic but i couldnt believe he was 50 when i read an article on him a few weeks ago.

I liked him last year. Bruised a few massive egos, nothing wrong with that.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Not sure I agree that this has anything to do with bruising egos - it's all quite the opposite in my view & nothing but a self-congratulatory exercise for the 'victims'. If Gervais really did p*ss people off that much last year, he wouldn't be back - it's as simple as that. To me, what's going on here instead is the Golden Globes is being framed as a Comedy Roast, Gervais the roastmaster & Hollywood the roastee.

It doesn't exist this side of the Atlantic, but in America there's a long tradition of the comedy roast, usually involving celebrities from TV, film and comedy. Hell even the President gets involved in them from time to time. So I don't see how this is anything more than Gervais & his Hollywood pals having yet another private chortle between them. So anyone thinking this is a big rebellious moment I believe is sorely mistaken ...

Can't believe I stayed up to watch some of the Golden Globes...never again! Any little rude remark or joke was bleeped. Harvey Weinstein thanked by everyone and their granny! The best part was the dog from The Artist.:)

Quite surprised that Rooney Mara didn't win for "Dragon Tattoo"; she was amazing in it! Such a tough role and she pulled it off.

Scorsese getting Best Director was quite a surprise. I wonder if this puts Hugo in the Oscar race. The Artist is looking like another Driving Miss Daisy. The AMPAS will probably happily give it Best Picture while giving Best Director to either Payne or Scorsese.

So tame! I was quite surprised; they bring him back and hand him a list a mile long of things you can say/people you can't píss off. Just let him do this thing for pity's sake and step in if it gets too inappropriate.

Na compared to previous years he was tame had maybe one or two decent gags

I thought Gervais was decent enough. I really didnt expect him to say F U C K.......and for them not to cut it out. Its was worth the price of admission to see the movie stars squirm and look worried that Gervais would slate them next. Tina fey sitting there stoney face was priceless, elton John looking like a crumpy old woman.
Fair play to Woddy Allen for not showing up, that was super cool. Although I personally think Moneyball's script was better than Moonlight in Paris. Also "Drive" winning for best action film????? Thats as bizarre as Michelle williams winning for "Marilyn and Me" for best comedy or musical actress. Seth Rogen was spot on when he was reading out her nomination and remarked: For the Hilarious comedy Marilyn and me, michelle williams.
Cant believe Drive wasnt nominated for music score or for even best song. I have that soundtrack and theres several songs on it that are head and shoulders above the crap that madonna won for.
