Future QBs for Miami

Well we all know that we're going to be looking for a QB in next year's draft. Whether it be Andrew Luck, Landry Jones, Matt Barkley, RGIII, Ryan Tannehill etc...

To be honest I haven't watched a lot of college games this year. SO I am not sure about any of the QBs.

I have heard all the rave reviews for Luck, so I just wanted to get a consensus from the rest of you folks about Luck. The good and the bad. Can he make all the throws, short and deep? Can he thread the needle and stick the ball into tight spots when needed? How is he in pressure situations? How do the other QBs compare to him in these categories?

I want to have a franchise QB really bad. I want to know what all the options are for this upcoming draft. If we don't get the number 1 overall pick what are our options. I am going to do some homework and try and get a list of players I'd like to see us draft, not that we'd get them all.

Everything has really already been said about Luck. He's not perfect - the hype around him as spiralled out of control. Phil Simms dared criticise a few aspects to his game last week and got chastised for doing so, which is ridiculous as he had some valid points. But he is as good a QB as you're going to draft and has a skillset that means he could step into any offence in the NFL from day one and not look out of place. The big deal about Luck is not his physical talent - there's nothing that distinguishes him from any of the other top QB prospects over the past few years in his passing ability - but it's his head that has him so highly rated. He's been given increased responsibility with play calling this year in Stanford, and with only 1 loss on the year, it's not exactly going too badly. That's where most of the Manning comparisons come from - he reads defences well (at least at college level) and is just clued in. Unless Miami are willing to trade up to number 1, I think you can forget about Luck. He's either going to Indy, or someone else will trade up to get him (I'm leaning towards the latter).

You have to pick a QB, there's no question about it imo. Miami actually has a lot of talent all over the field, and the only other positions where you could justify spending a #2 pick are ones in which Miami has very talented players. Perhaps there's a shout for more defensive line options, but this draft class is lacking in elite options there. Plus, at the end of the day it's likely that Tony Sparano won't be there anymore, so a new coach will want his own franchise QB going forward.

Barkley will be number 2, and Miami is a likely destination for him if you guys are picking there. He's as good a consolation prize to Andrew Luck as you're going to get, and it's been said a few times on here already that almost any other year and he would be the consensus #1 pick. His accuracy is outstanding, most impressively on deep throws down the field, which he can make with ease because he has a big arm. His TD passes have increased with each season at USC, and his interceptions have decreased, and his experience running a pro-style offence will do him the world of good (has no problem taking snaps from under centre either). He's also a natural leader, and is somewhat of a Jesus freak so you've got very little character concerns. I think Miami would be mad to pass up on him, but I can't imagine a scenario in which they would.

RGIII is a fantastic prospect, and has blown everyone away this year. His accuracy is probably better than that of Luck and Barkley - it's damn near perfect - and in many ways, he's very reminiscent of Cam Newton - terrific passer (throws the ball better than anybody in college), amazing athlete (former track star) but has only produced in an offence built around him. Unlike Luck or Barkley, he's not asked to do much on the playcalling side of things. That's something he'll learn in time though, and he would actually be a good fit for Miami's offence but I have my doubts about whether he'll actually declare this year. If he waits until next year, he could probably be the first overall pick. He is very Newton-esque, and the kind of guy scouts will be fawning over at the combine.

Landry Jones is a bit like Ryan Mallet, with some added mobility. He has a huge arm, and is just the right size for a QB - he's a big guy. He can make some great deep throws, his accuracy is pretty good, and has a great completion percentage. Unlike Mallet, he's also pretty mobile. I'm not as high on Jones as I was preseason though, because he just hasn't got that wow factor I expected him to develop this year. He's been very, very good, don't get me wrong, but a lot of that would be down to the Oklahoma offence. He's thrown some poor interceptions this year aswell. I just expected him to be a lot better than he was last year. I'd compare him to Matt Stafford in how he plays the game.

Of course, all the above is imo, so my biases could be over-rating/under-rating certain parts of their game.
