1 resigned (1 other stated on today fm's last word he too was resigning) & 1 being threatened about getting booted out?
More members begining to complain about Gilmore's direction for the party/

Is this the begining of the end for Labour? Discuss

Who are the people in question here apart from the Willie Penrose stunt?

Nessa Childers MEP because she opposed Kevin Cardiff appointment to the European Court of Auditors.

Looks like it, Gilmore denying it today so it must be true.

We probably are witnessing a shift in irish politics. SF will be the main left party.
Only a complete numpty would ever again vote for FF.

Labour will end up like the P.D.'s and the Greens if they start treating the people like fool and backing all these austerity measures while protecting the guilty. The lies they told the students are just the start.

Labour and FG have such a big majority that they can afford to lose a few loose cannons and are still very early to their term so shafting the electorate is still fair game.

WRT SF I would be of the opinion that while Gerry Adams and Martin McG are the face of SF they will never become a mainstream party as they are too close to their murky past and they will always be bashed over the head with 'Have you ever shot anyone?' type questions

That big majority counts for nothing if the Labour party starts to divide which is very probable. They conceded a lot of ground idealogically over the years to meet Fine Gael and look very much look like "New Labour" did in the UK. They've gotten away from the fundamental principals of the Labour movement and there are probably more than a few backbenchers and grassroots members that don't like that. We're only now starting to see the cracks in the Labour party but I would imagine they've been there since the start of this government.

Politically they're much better alligned to SF and I wouldn't be surprised to see them becoming friendlier over time, especially as the likes of Doherty, Tobin and McDonald start to become the face of post-IRA Sinn Fein.

Labour were always going to struggle. They only did slightly better then Fianna Fail in the last election in terms of first prefernce votes, that's a pretty terrible result really. Problem is the Public service/unions are going to be hit and there is no choice so they could well lose a lot of there core vote. Also with things like welfare also having to fall it another portion of their welfare votes won't be to happy. Fine Gael are in a great position because there is no other right sided party you can vote for really. If you're a middle income private sector worker they are very few choices.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Fianna Fail take advanage of this and trumphet the cause of the public service and unions more now, they have also been big popular with the public sector.

People resigning over NO LAYOFFS, but closure of a barrack, spouting misinformation that it will cost the state money .... false, because they are selling the site, it will net the Government tens of millions.

Another resigns over hospital department closures? Health Service is a blackhole for billions thanks to the HSE and previous Government, tens of billions were poured down that hole by Bertie and co., and the service is a disgrace. We could really use that money now. Did anyone think cleaning up this mess was going to be painless?

Anyone who sees these cuts and resignation of drame queens who are branded "hero's" and further their own political career and agenda, as anything other than what it is, are fools imo. Especially considering the amount of negative attention given to these trivial situations, over-hyped, can't wait to see the reaction to the budget. Fu*k Enda Kenny, he ruined this country.......right?

They cannot sell the site as its a heritage building with a protection order on it i'm told.

Heritage buildings do not have to be under state control, such as places of worship, and buildings such as the French language school down the road from the dail, or the martello tower in Sandymount for example. Privately owned buildings with privately owned business' running from them. (at least Martello tower in Sandymount was converted to a cafe, but hasn't been in use for years for some reason).

However, a condition of sale is the maintenance of the building and unable to alter the existing structure in any way. (the Martello tower had a seperate building built adjacent to it)

Some councillor on yesterdays news said that the site could not be sold.

I'm pretty sure he's wrong. After all, it was the Governments plan. The term "local" councillor raises alarm bells immediately when it comes to points scoring on radio shows. There are multiple examples of Heritage sites in private control. I can't think why this would be any different.

She shouldn't have said anything about Cardiff not that she only said what we were all thinking but him going to Europe will save us money. If he was forced by the government out of office they would have to give him a lump sumand pension. By him shifting off to Europe they will have to look after wages his wages.
