"Are you paying rent" question

Looking to apply for JSA soon and this question is bothering me - I'm living with a friend of mine and I pay rent to his mother (who has since moved out but still owns the place). Does the inspector look into who you pay rent to or does it matter?

    Any help guys?

I've been searching through some of the threads here looking for any info. Seems that I'll need 3 months of bank statements to show to them at the Social Welfare office...another problem is that whenever I'd receive my JSB I'd rarely ever put it into my bank account, so I'd always pay rent with that cash. Is this going to cause any problems down the line?

Hi. I live in my parents' house (they don't live here) and pay rent to them. I just put the amount down on the form. As for the bank statements, I don't think they want them to see what you're spending your money on, just to make sure you don't have loads of money in your account. I don't think paying rent in cash will cause any problems.

Thanks for the reply. Did the inspector ask you about the amount of rent/who you were paying it to? Did he look for any names or anything like that? It's just that I don't really want to get my mate's mom in a bit of bother by saying that I'm paying rent to her!

Sorry, can't help you there. I never saw an inspector.

Unless you're applying for rent supplement (or unless you're offsetting housing costs against maintenance payments that you receive from an ex for any children you may have), they don't care who you're paying rent to, as the amount you pay has nothing to do with them, and isn't taken into account.

Oh it's only an issue if I'm looking for rent allowance? Hmm..wonder why they put it on the JSA form then if it's not relevant to my situation.

So my JSA interview will be basically showing bank statements and some proof that I've been looking for work?

How do you prove you've been looking for work when it seems no one is sending out rejection letters anymore??

Do they call out to the house and inspect it? I've only applied for JSA and not rent allowance.

Yeah I'm not getting any rejection letters either which might be a problem.

I'm in a similar situation myself with regards to the rent situation, what does the inspector ask when you go in for the interview? Do you have to tell them who you're paying rent to and all that? It's just that it's my own situation and I don't want to be giving names of other people and getting them involved in my own problem. Will they be coming to my house?

Yes, when you make an application for a social welfare assistance (as opposed to benefit) payment, the social welfare inspector will call on you. They will have with them your JSA application and documents and will sit down with you and talk you through the details you have given and basically check that your circumstances are in accordance with the information you have given. They will have ID with them.

From your earlier posts, it seems likely that they will ask you if you are cohabiting with your friend (f you were, your means test would consider his income) as opposed to just sharing the house, so be prepared for that. It would be good to have evidence/receipts that you pay your own rent and produce utility bills etc., in your own name. The issue of who owns the house will therefore come up but it is not your concern as to whether or not your landlady has registered. Although I understand that she is your friend's Mum and you don't want to cause hassle for her, she surely knows that if she is renting out a room in a house she doesn't live in, she should be following the necessary procedures.

About the job applications, the SW is aware that many employers fairly frequently don't acknowledge applications, so just have a record of where the job was advertised, printout etc., and a copy of your application.
