Buying new laptop for college - would greatly appreciate any advice!

I need a new laptop for college - I clung onto the old one as long as possible but it seems to be dying, and at 5 1/2 years old I suppose I can't blame it.

I've been looking around but I'm fairly bamboozled by the various considerations, so I'd love some advice if anyone was so kind as to take the time.

Using the template from the sticky:

Budget: In theory up to a grand, since I started off looking at Macs, but actually I think I could probably get what I need for under 500 euro (obviously that would mean PC). If I came across something that seemed really ideal I wouldn't mind paying 700-800-ish.

Intended use: College work, internet, listening to music, photos, Skype, watching DVDs. College work = lots of onscreen reading (including of scanned-in documents which seem to be much clearer and more comfortable to read on some computers than others), Word, possibly PowerPoint, internet, the usual.
Also, to connect to the college wireless apparently I need a wireless card which is certified for ‘PEAPv0/EAP-MSCHAPv2’.

    Mobility: Fairly important.

Warranty: Well as you can probably tell I clearly won't be fixing anything myself, but I think I'd take the gamble on paying to get it fixed rather than pay extra for a longer-than-typical warranty, if that's the question.

What Operating System do you use? Equally happy with either Mac or Windows, we have both in college and at home.

I'm very interested in durability - as in something that will work for as long a time as possible, even if it'll end up behind the times. I'd also like relatively low power usage if possible.

Thanks a million, and please don't eat me for being thick! :)
