Guilty Pleasures

For many years more than I care to remember, I have been a fan of *gulp* Barry Manilow! He has to be my biggest guilty pleasure ever and as I sit here telling you this I am cringing because I know I will get some stick :o

But, the even worse news (or good if you're also a fan) is that he's on at the O2 next May and I've just been and booked tickets for me and hubby (God help him!) and I'm feeling delighted with myself.

So, now my embarrassment is starting to subside, let me ask you....who or what is your guilty pleasure?

Come on now lads and lasses, 'fess up!!!

Ooh I'll have to think of something. Though there's nothing wrong with liking Barry Manilow. What does it matter what anyone else thinks!? :)

    This. I'm a hedonist.
You should never feel guilty for being alive and having fun.

So no chance of a Barry Party then!? Ho hum, well getting back onto the OT. My main guilty pleasure is at present, Cadbury's chocolate, and in the distant past......:o The Monkees! :o

Here we commmmmmmmme, walkin' down the street,
We get the funniest looks from ev'ry one we meet.
    Hey hey.......

Though it wasn't too long before I realised that the songs were bad, and they often hit duff notes. So I returned to where I belonged.....with The Beatles, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah!

...We're the Monkees and people say we monkey around
But we're too busy singing, to put anybody down....

Yep, I remember them too. To my shame, I had a picture of Davy Jones above my bed...to be followed not long after by David Cassidy and Donny Osmond :o

What a very misguided teenager I was, ho hum.

Funny thing ,in real life(:o) I've never fancied men with blond hair, but David Soul.........now he really did it for me ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,108 ✭✭✭Jellybaby1

Wasn't he really cheesy though? Maybe we should have a 'who are you proud to have been a fan of?' thread. For that then it would have to be Simon and Carabuncle, at least they could sing, and write, and play the most beautiful melodies. Hope you all saw the recent documentaries on TV in the last week on them, plus the one on George Harrison, though I decided I'm glad I worshipped the Beatles from afar 'cos I don't think I would have enjoyed their company if I'd gotten any closer!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,639 ✭✭✭✭OldGoat

As we already have a music thread it would make sense to keep all the music posts in there and free up this thread for any of those other guilty pleasures you might have - like a fondness for very expensive shoes - or chocolate - or chocolate shoes...errrm...OK, yeah, lets leave my personal fetishes out of it. :o

You're right OG. Sorry. My one and only guilty pleasure is Cadbury's chocolate though, nothing else will do. Have been known to keep a secret stash but I copped on during the days of 'You are what you eat' and stopped doing that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,551 ✭✭✭Rubecula

I have guilty pleasures, but I don't feel at all guilty over them.

Does this mean I am banned from this thread?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,109 ✭✭✭enfield

Having a smoke of me tobacco pipe indoors, (he, he, he) when the daughter is away. Sure I'm going straight to hell. There now you all know my guilty secret!!!
    The shame of it all.

MERLOT .......... If I feel like a few snifters I merely drink it to stop feeling guilty. The guilt trip seems to disssipate after the first few glasses.
    Cheers! :D

If you don't drink Krug you are too cheap for me :D:D:D

To be honest I prefer Perry, tastes better and is a lot cheaper than champers. I suppose that is a guilty pleasure of mine even though it is quite rare I touch the stuff. And as I said earlier, I don't feel guilty anyway LOL

    Forgot about those...yummy :D

While we're talking about food, when I lived in the UK I loved Steak & Kidney Puddings. Hard to find them here, but when I need some stodgy comfort food they can't be beat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,551 ✭✭✭Rubecula

Cor yes, and remember Jam Roly Poly puddings with hot custard?

Good 'stick to your ribs' food that stuff.

Just googled and neither of them from Wales. I was sure that there was a Welsh accent somewhere. But it's been a long, long time. Does Butlins still exist as a holiday camp?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,899 ✭✭✭✭BBDBB

it does exist as a brand but its very different from the old days

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 566 ✭✭✭Mollywolly

Aaah, Butlins! I have very fond memories of Butlins Pwllheli. Not only was it the first time I tried baked beans , it was also where I had my first proper date (I was 15 at the time).

It was 1974 and I'd been there with my parents and my best friend - probably the best holiday of my teenage years :D

I can still remember the drive home. Picture this: hot, July day; stuffy Ford Anglia (with no opening windows at the back, so very, very hot!); me wearing a polo neck because of the large love bi...ahem, bruise... on my neck! Dad asking me why I was wearing a jumper on a day like this - me pretending I had a cold! Managed to keep the "bruise" hidden for the best part of a week until it had faded.

    Aaah, the good old days.....;)

Ruth Madoc was originally Ruth Llewellyn, brought up by her grandmother in Llansamlet in Swansea so there is definitely Welsh blood there.
