Was driving to a match last night when without warning the dipped beams failed on my 00 mittsubishi carisma. When the lights failed the battery light and the ABS light came on on the dash. I proceeded to drive to the match with the main beams on and these became faint as I drove on further. Just after the dipped beams went the was a slight screeching from the fan belt but it soon went away. The bulbs only went in the car 5-6 wks ago but they were so called high intensity ones i got off ebay. They were 55w bulbs. I haven't had a chance to look at the bulbs yet but i presume if i get new bulbs and fuses that all will be well again and nothing more sinister has happened.

Sounds like your alternator has gone.

Don't think so. Charging light has gone off again and car is starting no bother.

Probably the diode pack in the alternator then, heat affects them.
There is definately something up with the charging system.

Well I replaced the headlight bulbs and fuses and the car worked fine for one day. Was driving back from town yesterday and firstly the dipped beam fails again. Them the main lights get very dim followed by the ABS light coming on on the dash, speedo and rev clock needles dropping away down to 0, windscreen ipers coming to a halt, radio goes off and engine dosent rev properly >:O Is it the end of the road for the car as she aint worth a whole pile?

Sounds like the Alternator only to me... breakers yard would be a cheap source I'd say.

Take it to an auto electrician.
If they are good they should be able to tell within a few minutes what the problem is, and offer a solution
It doesn't sound terminal and if the rest of the car is good then you may as well fix it and keep it on the road.
any second hand car can suffer the same fate and you could buy another one that does exactly the same thing!

Yup know a good auto electrician back home. Will have to get him to have a look at it. Cant see the alternator being at fault because the car starts with the first tip of the key and no screeching from the fan belt. Have a gut feeling that there is a short in the wiring somewhere but I'll leave that to the experts :)
