Here's my story. I'm driving a 00 25 rover which I absolutely love. Someone reversed into it and drove off on Saturday night. The damage done would cost more than the car is worth to fix. I decided to buy a new one and sell my own for parts and try to break even. Bought another car on Sunday exact same as my own except in silver. Now driving it home smoke started coming out of engine. The person I bought it from won't answer his phone. Bought it off done deals. I'm wondering could I repair the new car with parts from my old one? And if so how much would someone charge to possibly change whole engine from one car to the other?

he he ... rover .... k11 engine, i presume you have 1.4 (or 1.6)engine, those engines are very weak, common problem - headgasket. it fails every few years over bad engine design(too long engine head bolts). might it nice to drive rover (i had it for 3 years), but i had change two times headgasket. first time it was changed in garage, second time (i thought garage didnt fit gasket properly) myself.

I think you wont get anything off previous owner, as it was private sale, and i think there is no warranty on such deals.

From what you described, it is typical headgasket failure. Once properly fitted, it will last for couple years.

I think you may change engine from your old car to this, if you doing yourself. Labour charges are pretty high for engine swaps, for same money youd get headgasket fixed. i think original parts were sold at rimmerbros.co.uk ... or somehow like that. .. use google. If you around blanch , i could have look.

Sorry, misunderstood, smoke from exhaust, or smoke comes from engine bay ? If smoke goes from engine bay, could be only leaking pipe or radiator.

Smoke coming from front bonnet of engine.

Smoke coming from front bonnet of engine.

Right, then shouldnt be expensive fix, could be just leaking pipe or rad. wont be expensive fix id say, if you using your old car parts.
does engine starts and drives ? before start, just make sure, water is in radiator and water expansion bottle.

Is it steam rather than smoke?

If steam check it's not one of the rad hoses leaking and the coolant causing a cloud of steam.

If the engine is already beyond repair you could always look at changing engines between the two cars.

On another note there is nothing wrong with the K11 engine, the design fault is with the amount of coolant the system hold, as the amount is so small the smallest leak can lead to overheating issues. I have driven my Rover 200 1.4 between Galway and London a number of time over the last two years with no issues and have owned it for the last four and a half years without issue.

when it starts to 'smoke' do you know where the temp needle is at? Do you reckon is it smoke or steam? Would there be any chance of posting a pic of where the 'smoke' is coming from?

also does the gears switch properly , and clutch releases properly? could be slipping clutch, that could cause smoke under bonnet also.

Thats also true, but also long bolts make a trouble for headgasket. when engine heats up, they strech, and when engine cools down, they shrinks ... wouldnt notice that difference with eye , but it causing headgasket failure. new bolts, and proper multilayer headgasket would solve these problems.

ive spend many hours in rover forum regarding this problem.

MaryBeth seems like you were in an awful hurry to buy a car. Not much you can do about it now. When buying private you need to check out a car very well as you have no comeback.

Oh I know I've no one to blame but myself for this. Shud have checked out car properly. I need a car for work so that's what the hurry was. I'm not sure If it's steam or smoke. I'll check it out when I get home. Your all being so good thanks so much for all the help.
