Regardless, he's one of the best sports journalist out there, particularly in the field of interviews.

Not that I ever bought it, but the only possible reason I ever might have now seems to have gone.

    I find this post hilarious.

Why do you say that? Often this is the kind of statement thrown out when someone says some truth that another don't want to hear.

    Its his truth you mean.

The Michelle Smith affair. Whatever your opinions are of the whole mess reporters should not make it personal. He had some sort of vendetta against her.

His latest obsession is with Armstrong.

And yes Paul everyone knows there are drugs in cycling but there really is no need to ram it down our throats constantly.

There is a need to ram it down peoples throats, especially the throats of those who run the sport and have been very happy to turn a blind eye to blatant drug abuse for decades. As long as drug abuse continues it needs to be reported on and Kimmage is one of very few journalists prepared to do this. Shame on the others imo.

I actually applaud him for doing this, as do many fans of the sport, I'd rather see a clean sport than one where those who can afford the newest generation of boosters dominate the sport.

If there were more journalists like Kimmage who are prepared to rub the comfy ststus quo up the wrong way to find the truth, not just in sport but all walks of life things would be a damn sight better overall

But surely a journalist should try to be balanced in his reporting, something that Kimmage could hardly be accused of?

He is balanced imo, he knows he is being lied to so he goes after that person. I think thats fair enough. This is the case in cycling anyway.

To be honest I don't know anything about him and the Michelle Smith case, I wasn't in Ireland in the 90's or early 2000's and i'd be willing to accept that maybe he showed bias here. I'm well aware of the circumstances of the case though.

Kimmage incidentally is held in the highest regard by his fellow journalists, though some of the cycling journalists don't like him as he has p1ssed so many cyclists off and they are taking this out on a lot of journalists by restricting interviews. Incidentally, his articles are used to teach journalism in many third level institutes.

leaving aside the drugs issue, i think he is a pretty good sports writer and I would miss him. He ghosted Tony Cascariono's biography years ago which i thought was a good read. one thing id say about him is he is best in print - doesnt come across as a tremendously likeable character on radio or tv, bit dogmatic. Not a huge amount of craic, you might say.

It depends on what you're covering as to whether you need to be balanced I think. It's certainly not a pre-requisite of journalism though. There's no need to write about terrorism, gang violence, drug abuse, cheating in a balanced matter. However if you're reporting on a sporting event, or an election the criteria are a bit different.

Balanced schmalanced. I think he's fcukin brilliant. Say it like you see it and to hell with the consequences. Equivocation and fear of upset doesn't make for good journalism or good reading.

He is an excellent writer and interviewer whether dealing with doping issues or not, one of the best sports writers of all time, really engaging (not just with cycling.) Hopefully he will find a new home quickly enough.

Couldn't agree more. I'm sure it won't be long before he's snapped up by another paper.

Two articles writen by him stand out in my memory; the article in the Sindo on Shay Elliot back in '98 the time the TdF was here and an interview with Sir Geoff Hurst in the Times a couple of years ago - two great pieces of writing.
