    Hi all,

So I blew up the power supply and motherboard out of warranty on my old dell, and bought a better computer instead of getting it fixed.

Now I'd like to get all my data off my old hard drive (vista 32) and copy it onto my new machine (win 7 64). I opened up the case, plugged in the old hd but I think I couldn't access my user profile because of my old vista UAC security. Does anyone know a solution please, or could someone recomend a professional where I can get the data copied to an external? thanks.

    Hi,

Unless you have encrypted your personal folders, your files should be accessible from System Partition:\Users\Your User Name\...

Your user on Win7 will need to have administrator rights for accessing vista personal folders (it will ask if you want to do this, just click "continue") so check it first in Control Panel > Users.

You need to take ownership of the Vista folders. To do this open>Users>Your Name and right click on Documents/Desktop/Downloads etc you wish to copy over, and choose properties. In properties choose Security and click [Edit] to edit permissions, click your name and give full control.
Not finished yet! Now do the same thing right clicking each folder but in the security tab choose "Advanced". Choose the owner Tab, Edit>Change owner to your current PC name and tick the checkbox replace owner objects etc. Click ok.
You should then have full access to the files/folders

    Nick
