Buying windows in the UK

    Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone has bought windows from the UK recently? I'm really interested in some Swedish windows that a UK based company has priced me for (as far as I know this window company does not have an Irish supplier) but I do not fully understand how to calculate the vat rate applicable to them. I'm aware of EU rules which say you pay the vat rate applicable to the product in the country of purchase (ie not Irish vat rate) but I've also read that the vat rate applicable to windows for new builds in the UK is 0%...so, does that mean there's zero vat applicable in the case of me purchasing these windows in the UK for my house here in Ireland? or am I being naive?
To be fair, even with 20% VAT these window are still my top choice and come in on budget...just trying to figure out where I stand exactly.

    Many thanks,
    Bob

    Bob,

If you were a self builder in the UK then the company would charge you no VAT, but because you are in Rep Ireland then they will be charging you VAT, unless you can get your hands on an Irish VAT number, quote it to them and the deal is seen as an export, so therefore no vat to you.

I am sure somebody will give you a VAT number even if you have to give them a couple of euro

When you use your vat number in the uk, a transaction record is registered with Revenue ireland, and you will be asked in time about this purchase, so i wouldnt be recommendning anyone to be using someone elses vat number here kboc!.

We don't advocate VAT fraud here. What is being suggested above is just that.

Hi kboc, that answers my question perfectly thanks very much. I shall not be following (or re-quoting) the advice given in the rest of your post even though I'm sure you posted it with best intentions. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Bobbie, whats the backup service and warranty on these windows if you have issues. Is there any?

    Hi tred,

I haven't delved that far into the actual supply of these windows yet although I have made a mental note of the possible negative aspect of purchasing windows from a non-Irish based supplier, but will not put undue weigh on that until the final, final decision has been made, in the end we may find an equally good product, with an Irish supplier, which would be an ideal situation for us. As it stands, these particular windows are top of the shortlist (for all their technical advantages) but I'm not satisfied that we've fully completed the shortlist yet but at least now we know the full price of the Swedish favourites for comparison purposes with the others window manufacturers we're considering.

    Cheers,
    Bob
