At the end of Miriam meets.. this morning on Radio one , at 54:00

Can be found from within herehttp://www.rte.ie/radio/page/radio1-podcasts.html

There was a piece by some 'comedian' taking the 'michael' out of our new President and him not having had his first official function yet.

The piece itself was bad enough but the host's reaction was pathetic

In this day and age nobody is above criticism, satire and sneering. I don't particularly like it but that's the way it is.

    which one?

Of course the presidency is not above satire, the current incumbent offers the most material in a long time.

I remember Robinson coming in from a lot from certain quarters.

Even as a huge MDH fan, I have to say no, of course not. No politician is, and Michael D has been satirised on Gift Grub and more for YEARS now, it would be a bit strange if it suddenly stopped!

If the Brits can satirise the royal family (remember Spitting Image???) then we can certainly do the same for our President!

Don't see why he should be above satire.

Nobody is that is why it is satire, as soon as one person is subject to being above it then everyone else can also make their case too.

Satire works because nobody takes it seriously, as soon as someone is seen as being above it then more people will start to take it seriously.

Nothing should be beyond Satire, see Brass Eye for example (Special Episode - NSFW).

Unfortunately the standard of Irish Satire (and comedy in general) is rather poor (but that is something for a different thread/forum).

Spitting Image also satirised politicians and celebrities, not just the Royals.

I don't think much satire is required when the likes of Ray Burke & Michael Lowry were invited to his inauguration.

My opinion of the man fell significantly on hearing about that.

Satire / What do you call a country that is bankrupt, and massively so, electing a Socialist as Head of State ?
I call it hilarious but it so defines the irish mentality - stick your collectives heads in the sand and pretend it is not happening - never mind the industrious Germans will tell you what to do and how to do it !

Is this actually true ? Did not Burke serve time in prison :http://www.rte.ie/news/2005/0124/burker.html

And hasnt ireland spent hundreds of million on a Tribunal revolving around Lowry ?
