Washing machine mains light flashing

This morning, my washing machine has started acting up. Fairly sure I'll have to call out a plumber (?) but was wondering if there's some things I can try myself. I'm not in the least big handy, so I'll be limited to turning things off and on again :)

The problem is that when I select a program and turn it on, there's a 'mains' light that just keeps flashing on and off. After about 5 seconds, the rotary dial to select the program starts looping through all the options, as if it thinks each part of the program is done. It keeps doing this until I turn it off. The door never locks and the program never starts.

I've tried turning it off at the mains and putting more or less clothes into it, and... that's about it. I know this is difficult to diagnose over the internets, but is there anything else I should try before paying a fortune in call out charges for something that may just be me being a dumbass?

    It's a Hotpoint BWM12.

Most likely a control board fault, notorius in todays machines. It will set you back approx €100.

flashing light and turning dial - this is giving the fault code that the engineer can read - most independant service people can't read them and write the machine off - hotpoint do an inclusive deal for €114 for parts and labour
