I was reversing last night and heard a big "clunk" sound and the car wouldnt go into gear. Its a 02 focus lx saloon

Today it was ok going from reverse to first to second. But after a while wouldnt change again.

I had to drive to work in 2nd (not fun)

The clutch is a bit spongey but im afraid it could be the grear box as I dont know a thing about cars.

Any ideas how much it would cost to get a new clutch and to have it fitted (cork area)....

    Nice wan

May be the clutch slave cylinder. The gearbox still has to come off to change it though.

Can you select all gears when the engine is off?

Is it petrol or diesel? New clutch in a petrol including a new concentric slave cylinder would be around €450 fitted.

Is there anyway of knowing if its the clutch slave cylinder before bringing it to a mechanic?

If its a gearbox issues would I even be able to change the gears? I can change them now once the car if off (not ideal)

Sounds like the slave cylinder so, gearbox failure would be almost unheard of in a focus.

If the slave cylinder has failed you have to change the clutch kit anyway as chances are brake/clutch fluid will have leaked onto the clutch from the cylinder. The vast majority of the price to change is labour for removing the gearbox anyway.

Its a petrol. Yes I can go into all gears with the engine off. 450 is a nightmare of a price. Oh well what can you do.

New starter last week and this today.

Just trying to help out here, have you checked the gear linkages?

And, as much as some people might spit on the idea, have you considered clutchless shifting? If you can get it up to 2nd, you're in quite a good position to pop it out of 2nd and into 3rd, 4th and fifth. Just to get you out of a spot mind you, it's fairly tricky to get the hang of.

Hey man, I dont have a clue about gear linkages (i think ive figured out what they are from their name, but thats about it)

Well im lucky that my drive home is around residential areas so staying in 2nd should be much of an issue. Ill hopefully have it to a mechanics tomorrow so I wont have to do clutchless shifting, but ill keep it in mind if needs be

If the linkages were the issue you wouldn't be able to select gear when the engine was off either.

It's not something to be taken lightly, if your mechanics is nearby, I wouldn't stress it. Otherwise you might belooking at a new gearbox. :o

@NissanDoctor, didn't think of that! Pesky sunday thinking...

Cool, so but the sounds of the esteemed scholars of boards its more than likely the clutch slave cylinder.

George Dalton has said it would cost around 450e for a new one fitted.

Does this sound reasonable to others?.
