You could try this: go to Control Panel on your pc, then Administrative Tools, then Services. Find 'Apple Mobile Device' & click on it. You should get an option to stop or restart the service. Choose Restart.

Then open iTunes & connect your phone to pc. It should then show up.

Hopefully that will work for you.

Try putting the iPhone into dfu mode (hold power button for 3 seconds and then the home button at the same time for 10 release power button while still holding home button) you will get a message on the iPhone connect to iTunes once connected your Mac should pick up the iPhone in dfu mode "error iTunes has detedted the iPhone in dfu mode and must be restored" hit ok, let's know how you get on

its a macbook i working with not a pc, but on that point, the iphone does not appear on my desktop when plugged in, although the iphone is being charged by the mac!

this may well be part of the issue!

Also: are you running the very latest version of iTunes (10.5)?

i think im getting to the bottom of the issue, the iphone 4s will only work with mac os x 10.5 or later, the latest version of itunes i can download on 10.4.11 is 9.2!

i unloaded itunes from the mac and tried to download itunes 10.5 and it would allow me run it on the machine.

so i guess i need to upgrade the operating system on my mac book to sync with the 4S? can anyone confirm this for me?

thanks for the replies folks btw, much appreciated.

i'll think i'll pop into the apple store tomorrow and see what more i can find out!

I'm using a Mac book pro. If you have backed up your iPhone with your Mac before great! if not you will loose any unsaved data!.try going into to iTunes cheack for updates and again in Mac system Check for update.if no updates are availbe do as I said above, you should get iTunes opening! ie your iPhone been detected.

ok folks, firstly, thanks for your help again!

the answer to the issue is that you must have mac os x 10.5 or later to sync the iphone 4s!

i updated to snow leopard today and the issue is now resolved!

i didnt think that it would be an issue because the macbook is only 4/5 years old, but there you go!

    thanks again.

    Will.
