CAP 1 Paper 4 2012

    Hey!

I’m hoping to sit the two CAP 1 Paper 4 half-papers, Tax and Law, next June 2012 as an external candidate.

I understand that once I apply for them I will have access to previous exam papers but I have no other study material.

The exams are a week after my final year exams so that week will constitute the majority of my study... although I would like to do some bit over the Christmas break too.

Just looking for advice on where I might be able to get study material free and what are the most important areas to cover?

Also, while I’m on the subject, it would be great if someone could tell me what happens if I fail one of the two exams. Can I just re-sit the failed subject in September or would I have to sit both again?

Any help at all is appreciated.

    Thanks! :pac:

Hi, I've no answers for you, only more questions i'm afraid!
Do you know how much study time is recommended for the CAP 1? Have you done the other 2 exams and if so, how long did you prepare for them beforehand?
Oh and my background's in economics, not accounting.

    Thanks

    No idea.
I have/will have Financial Reporting, Management Accounting and Finance from my undergrad. There is no Law taught in our course and we could only choose one of Tax and Management Acc.

I'm in a similar situation as my undergrad degree doesn't give me full CAP 1 exemptions I therefore need to sit tax and law externally in May so that I can do a masters in smurfit next September.

As I'm an external candidate I will not be able to attend lectures and therefore have no access to study material apart from the past exam papers.

If anyone has sat exams externally before or would be able to tell me where I might be able to get any study material that would be great ;)

Any advice at all would be appreciated :pac:

You can purchase the texts online

    http://www.charteredaccountants.ie/General/Shop/Books/Student-Texts/

Go to the main student page of the institute's website and download the competency statement which sets out the requirements at CAP1 level. Look at the timetable for CAP1, see how many classes for tax and law and use this as your base for time to spend learning the material. Study leave etc is detailed here. I don't know what the position is with regard to repeating externally. You would need to clarify thus with the institute.

I presume you will have access to the exam papers, solutions and examiners reports.

Anyone else have any experience of taking a couple of CAP 1 exams externally in their final year of college??

I will not be able to attend lectures as an external student and will have little time to study seen as the exams follow my college exams in May and was wondering how long have others needed to study to pass these exams??

Any advice at all is appreciated....
