guys is there anything to look out for in a 99 focus. 1.4 petrol with about 100k miles on it?

also what is one worth? looking at a very clean looking one with alloys, cd player, sunroof, front fogs etc for 1300. is that good?

    cheers

    Not the speedo anyway :P

With any car that old a good service history helps, MK1 Focus get good reviews. I wouldn't pay north of a thou for one though regardless of condition.

He means you wont have to watch out for the speedo because its so slow!

Just make sure the timing belt is done. Normally @ 80k on the pre 2000 models. They can suffer with yellow lenses on the headlights but there are plenty of solutions if you google it.

Otherwise if you are going for a hatch back check the rear washer is working as the pipe has been known to pop off and wet the boot.

Def should get one for €1000. Plenty out there.

    oh right! doh
well thats pretty obvious with any 1.4 in that class.

is there any other make/model in that size car that is a good buy?
im thinking the focus is the best of that size/year/budget???

The most common problems on this car is the digital odometer and speedo can stop working. This is usually a faulty senor and not expensive to replace. The other common problem on this car is they can go through coil packs. Again not overly expensive to fix.

Make sure the passenger side floor isn't wet. Water leaking in through the pollen filter is the cause. Simple enough to fix.
Then the usuals for any car.
Check especially the rear doors, at the bottom for rust. The drain holes get clogged with crap, and rot like a bastid.

I'll spout the same as I do when anyone looks at a focus, look for a 1.6.

Also, €1300 for a 99? Tis steep in my book! Has possible tacked on some extra for some wiggle room on haggling, but you shouldn't pay more than a grand for one.

IMHO, they're a great car. Decent boot, nice place to sit, reasonable on stuff, mine owes me nothing at this stage.

cheers folks. i dont think the 1.6 is an option but i have all ready said a 1.6 would be a better option. coming from a 206 so the 1.4 should be lively enough. it wont be on a motorway too often. mostly back road driving where you would be lucky to get a bit of road that would be safe too do 50mph on.

im guessing the focus would be the best of the cars she was looking at..
golf, leon, megane, rover 25, astra were some of the others she was on about

    Check the alloys!
Jack up the car and spin them by hand. If they wobble, they are warped and need to be replaced/repaired, not cheap either way.
Had several Foci myself, for some reason they seem to have soft alloys and they warp as soon as you look at them.
