Derbyshire police have made a number of arrests after offering wanted criminals free alcohol
Undercover officers phoned dozens of people who had evaded arrest pretending to be a marketing company giving away crates of beer, The Daily Telegraph reports.

Arranging a time to deliver, the police were able to arrest a total of 19 suspects who fell for the trick.
Chief Inspector Graham McLaughlin said: "These suspects are people who have managed to evade arrest for some time so we have used different tactics to find them.

"It has been very cost effective as it can take a lot of time and money to track people down.
"We use a variety of methods to arrest those suspected of committing criminal offences and we will continue to use new tactics when necessary."

I'd say it was embarrassing to say the least when their family and friends found out how they were caught! :pac:
Just goes to show once again - sometimes if something sounds too good to be true - it just might be! :D

This type of thing could have legal issues & moral ramifications on a societal level.

But the important question here is... did they get the free beer in the end?

Why do police have to release this crap to the media?? Surely it would be better for future raids/stings if they kept it to themselves. Bet they're giddy as feck once they catch a few of them and can't wait to blurt out how great they are by outsmarting criminals.

Maybe they didn't leak it. Maybe one of those arrested or their families did.
Then when a reporter goes for a comment from the police, they have to respond to at least explain their actions?

I understand that, but I really can't get the image of a giddy police person dying to release a press statement to announce how they've out smarted the criminals...

Is this not entrapment? And is it not illegal, or have I been watching too many films?

Because they want to let everyone know about how much of a good job they're doing, to justify their existence.

You need to look up the word in a dictionary.

    They offered free beer.

'Entrapment' claims are tried by possible criminals when they state they were tricked into committing a crime. The police just offered free beer. No crime, no one HAD to turn up nor was forced/coerced to.

I see. Cheers for the explanation. Does seem quite devious still, but sure it worked in this instance.

    IDIOTS!

If you've done a certain crime that likely warrents the police investigating your where abouts the last thing a person with any sense would do is go and claim free beer  .. or do anything with their real name

The same stunt was done a number of times successfully in America.
The police sent out letters to certain criminals telling them they had won a prize/raffle and they were to come to an office address to collect it.
They turned up ...and "GOTCHA!" LOL

Even a false wedding was once put on and certain criminals were invited.
(It was deliberately leaked to them that there might be some famous faces also attending - and a good few criminals turn up just out of curiousness)
...You can guess the rest - and there was also some very red criminal faces afterwards as they waited for the police bus to turn up to cart them off! LOL

Truth be known this 'scam' has probably reached its end. At least with free beer.

But the question remains, if this was a police tactic that proved successful. Why release it to the public for any tom, dick or harry to get wide to? .. To even get wide to other scams they may pull?

What the **** is a tray? Is that D4 slang for a slab of cans, because that's what it's called pretty much everywhere?

Slab is relatively new over here, the common term for donkeys years was "tray"

Back on topic, I bet most of them were watching Jezza Kyle waiting for their free beers to arrive :D

Thats proving my point ya know. That this is only a PR stunt for the police now that its copped onto. (of course not that anyone with cop on wouldnt already go to such a place to claim free stuff in the first place)

But its still stupid. This was Derbyshire. Some other scumbag in the UK can read the story or gets wind of it. By releasing it, its perhaps stopping other english police counties from doing the same. Let other idiot criminals fall trap, rather than being put wide by a PR stunt.

I mean, the cops are obviously going to do the same again. Not with beer. But with something else. All this story does is wise someone else up.
