New Ipod touch not syncing

Hi I recently got a new ipod touch and it won't sync with itunes for me (it wont load my songs onto it), When I go to file and click on sync its says step 1 of 3,2of3,3of3 but no songs are loading onto the touch,I had a ipod nano before this on it and that would sync fine. any help appreciated
