Do you fake laugh at jokes?

I do just to be polite and I die a little every time. When a good stand up tells a joke its usually hilarious. When a workmate or an associate tells a joke they normally have no delivery and it feels like you're obliged to laugh.

    Yes and it hurts.

I wrote an OP about it and never used it I'll post it up.

    Edit: Must have deleted it.

Nope. If it's not funny, it's not funny.

I think I sometimes laugh as an automatic reaction to others doing it :<

Yeah, I do. Usually before the Punchline is even delivered, just to show how well I understand witticisms

    Knock, knock.
    Who's there?
The police. I'm afraid there's been an accident. Your husband is in
    hospital.

A man walks into a pub.
He is an alcoholic whose drink problem is destroying his family.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,349 ✭✭✭✭starlit

No I don't. I will only genuinely laugh at a joke if I think its any bit funny!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,030 ✭✭✭✭Chuck Stone

I play poker in the pub every Thursday and there are the inevitable 'C'mere did you hear about....'

Whenever I hear that I just think 'Ah FFS now I have to do the fake laugh thing'.

I tend to just smile which lets them know it was a crap joke.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,349 ✭✭✭✭starlit

I will either laugh at the joke or laugh at the person saying the joke if its ridiculous or laugh with the person telling the joke if its any bit funny!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,538 ✭✭✭flutterflye

No, usually I just say "that was crap" or "eh, yeah, that wasn't funny".
People tell me I'm too blunt, but I think people are too fake.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,349 ✭✭✭✭starlit

Sometimes I will get my poker face on! ha ha ha! Just smile if I think the joke is shyte or don't understand it. :P

I'd say the same to friends but not work people. Btw people dont like honesty.

    Yeah, I know they don't!
But I was just never one of those people.

I just don't get doing or saying things that are not true for the sake of being polite or mannerly.

I'm alot better than I used to be - can hold my tongue more now, but I don't think I'll ever be able to be fake - and I don't want to be anyway.

No I don't laugh, I just smile politely till they're over whatever the hell it was they just said. I just carry on conversation once they've stopped, it probably makes them feel like shit, but I can't pretend to laugh at something I don't find funny.

You sure you'd like to live in a world where everyone was honest with their thoughts? I remember being honest with my brutally honest sister once. Cue her roaring her eyes out and not speaking to me for the best part of a year.

I've done that before - roared my eyes out at someone's honesty.
But Yes, I would much rather know someone's true feelings.
At least you know where you stand, and who your true friends are.

I really respect people who speak their mind actually - not those people who shout their opinions from the rooftops, but if you ask a question like "does this dress make me look fat", I would much rather hear "well actually it's not the most flattering, why don't you wear your red one instead?" than "no, don't be silly", when they really do think it is unflattering.

I'm going to be brutally honest with people who claim to be brutally honest all the time.

    You have no social skills.

I'm going to just presume you're talking to me there (well I'm answering whether you are or not!)

I'd be the first to say that I have no social skills!
Hence why I'm on the internet instead of out and about with friends!

And believe me, I have tried.
    I really have!
I just find it so hard and tedious.

I laugh before they start, and that usually shuts them up.

I actually wasn't talking about you I was making a general statement. If I was adressing something you said in particular I'd quote you like now :)

    Ah you must have some!?
I just find it so hard and tedious.

I'm not too bad with it. Slow to warm up but when I get to know people I'm grand.

If someone doesn't laugh at my jokes that makes them all the funnier in my head.

I'm not sure what that says about me though.

If its funny i laugh, if its not then i dont and to save them from embarrassment i'll usually say 'Get some new material, heard it years ago!'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,641 ✭✭✭Teyla Emmagan

Never. I might give them a 'You're a pathetic' smile, but that's it.

There is this girl in work who laughs at the end of every sentence. It's a nervous thing (I guess) but it DRIVES ME NUTS!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 461 ✭✭ballsacky

I'll often do a polite chuckle or smile at least. No need to be a tosser about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 770 ✭✭✭sgb

I try and be polite and always smile even it's not funny

I'm sure that's what most people do

I feel like a Barbie doll at times with one or two relations who think they're stand-ups, especially when they corner you at a family get together and it's non-stop "anecdotes and one-liners". One thing I can't stand is try hards like that..... you know the type I'm talking about, right? Headwrecking.
