Picked up my first bangernomics motor during the week.
Nissan Primera p11 144, 00 reg 2l petrol engine with an autobox.
All good and im happy with my purchase as everything appears to work and theres a sliver of tax and nct into the new year. #

Any way to the problem of which theres always one.
When starting the engine from cold turning the key in the ignition theres a grinding/screeching noise on start up. Lasts one or two seconds, engine starts cars fine and operates as it should. Once heated up subsequent start ups - no noise.
Anyone have this car and a similar problem before? serious or can it be ignored?
Am i doing something wrong as ive never driven an auto before
I need it to at very least see me into the new year as my other car gave up last week and this was all i could afford before christmas as i need a car for work.
    All help appreciated

Auxiliary belt(s) need tensioning or replacing? Neither one a big job.

Belts, as above, as well as a sticking starter motor are possible causes.

Thanks for the prompt replies. belts was my very first thought but ive had belt squeel before and im not really sure its that. It may be tho. Ill have a look at the belts for wear and tension tomoro when im off work and its not raining.

Considered the starter motor too. i still have an 02 p11 144 1.6 petrol in the drive. nissan doc would the starter motors be the same/transferable in these?

it wouldnt be the autobox engaging with a bad fly wheel would it? Its only when cold and ive never driven an auto (took a day to get used to no clutch:)) The box would be me only concern but it drives fine and gearshifts loevely and is lovely driving. But its the worst case scenario

A stupid question also. Am i fully compressing the parking break on startup with the car in d before turning the ignition? (i know I know but ive only ever had a manual)

I don't think the starters are the same, I can check later for sure.

An auto box doesn't have a flywheel so it won't be that:D

    ..

How can you start the car in D?
Either I am misreading something here or you are starting the car in D.....

You should only start the car in P.
I'm not sure what you are asking there....

You shouldn't be able to start the car in D.

    +1.

Normally you can only start an auto in P or N. If you can start in D there is something wrong, probably with the selector mechanism

They are generally bulletbroof cars except CVT gearbox. Make sure gearbox oil level is fine and color is reddish than blackish. You can check this by gearbox oil stick similar to engine oil stick. If you need to change or topup gearbox oil, buy special CVT oil from dealer.

I had one till 6 months ago and was very happy with it. A lot of car for the money.

Cheers thanks. It's only nissan that sells the gearbox oil so? It is a much better car than the 1.6 manual version I've had the past few years. Gearbox just went in that for the second time with only 110 on the clock.

Could be the driver rather then the car....I had a 95 1.6 one that for ages...sold on for 150 with 200,000mls still on its original clutch!

The 95 p10 was from a different era and as with most 90s jap cars were known to be fairly bulletproof.

The p11 144 (99-2002) was a different car and not as reliable.(a mash up of renault and nissan)

Anyway its outside what i asked but thanks
