Hi guy does anyone know if anyone in Galway is doing Crossfit? Few of us have moved from Waterford and would love to get into something similar going down here. Cheers :)

Nowhere like it being honest, there isn't even a gym with the proper equipment to do it in!
I run a pt studio and have all the tools for it but its all 1 on 1 stuff so not exactly what you are looking for

Is this similar to Fitsquad type of bootcamp training? If so they started up in Oranmore about 2/3 months ago. Monday, Wednesday and Saturday each week. I know a few people who go to it and think its a great workout and craic too. I'm sure they have a website.

Hey OP. Stench blossoms is correct regarding the Crossfit FB group in Galway. I set up that Facebook page to see if there was much interest around initially but at the moment there is a small group ( ranges from 2/3 to 7/8+) of us that have been training crossfit for a good while now and as far as i know there are a good few others in the galway region who are pretty into it also.
We mostly train in the park beside the Aquarium in Salthill tuesday and thursday evenings @ 7pm and used to train on saturdays on the beach close by. As already was mentioned there is no official crossfit affiliate in galway at the moment but there has been some considerable talk about one possibly being set up.. so hopefully in the near future we can have one to look forward to training out of! ;)
At the moment its mainly myself (padraic ) and a friend of mine ronan who have the most experience with crossfit so we can give any newcomers assistance if needed.
If anyone is interested in coming down and training with us feel free. Just drop a message onto the FB page and we can catch up and organise things there. :)
    Padraic

    Past Salthill, before Barna.

75euro membership per month is not feasible in Galway IMO but best of luck to them, Knocknacarra needed another option besides NRG

There's a feature in today's Sunday Business Post about Crossfit.
It's in the magazine, page 36&37.

are you allowed have crossfit but not call it crossfit ?

or is it similar to crossfit but not officially crossfit

You have to pay a fee (few thousand) to call it crossfit or have crossfit on your site (which they have)
Don't know if its yearly or a one off fee

75 euro per month would buy a serious amount of equipment to do crossfit at home. Thats an insane price.

If you consider informed performance in Dublin was charging 80 per month and that was one of the best gyms in terms of Olympic standard barbells and also coaching (Will Heff) and also full class access to all MMA classes with another top coach. Its closed due to not enough members.
Now there is going to be a 'gym' that charges 75 a month in Galway minus the high standard equipment , top class coaching and MMA classes. Western Fitness seriously need to rethink there prices. I have told already 6 galway people who adore Crossfit and all said it wasn't a hope they were joining due to the price.
Saying that tho all they need is 100 full time members and that should cover a lot of expenses for the first year

True but all you really need is a good personal trainer to make sure you are performing the lifts correctly, and the equipment of course. But a lot of crossfit routines can be done without much equipment.

Er, i'm paying 55 euro a month to try and weightlift on a platform the size of a matchbox.

I'd gladly pay another 20 for some space.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,153 ✭✭✭jimbobaloobob

is that for a trainer or for a membership?

In galway? GCG is 400 a year and you are guaranteed to get some of the best coaching in Ireland for free there.
The head coach in WF has no experience in oly lifting

To be fair, in my experience, whether somebody has or hasn't got specific qualifications bares very little relevance to their experience or ability to coach.

I dont think its fair to go knocking the capabilities of WF or its staff, it hasnt even opened yet.

    Give it a chance

Just going from a point of view of if you want to get better at oly lifting, powerlifting, bodybuilding then GCG would be the only place in Galway to go. Numerous European and Irish records set and plenty of Mr.Irelands (including the gym manager).
You are not going to get that in Crossfit...just like you won't get Crossfit in GCG.
IAWA has also given GCG sets of Olympic standard oly equipment which is a massive benefit as well

Edited post now, meant just from oly lifting experience, which is rare in Ireland

d-gal very unfair of you to bombard the community with these anti WF rants.
You cleary have either a financial or emotional stake in this other gym you keep going on about or else a personal problem with one the news crossfit guys.
And mentioning body building is pathetic. If people are looking for body building, yes, they should stay clear of crossfit in the same way if they are looking for boxing or triathlons, they should stay clear of crossfit.

I actually have zero association with GCG so that isn't 'clear' at all. I do however appreciate the amount of top class athletes they produce. I don't train there either by the ways so less of your accusations.
I have no problem with crossfit, its a great way to get fit. I do have a problem with the price as I don't think it will work in galway and that would be a pity as knocknacarra needs another gym. I do however hope they succeed as its great to see an alternative to your 50 treadmill and bile gyms with a smith machine in the corner.
As I explained to a couple of guys by PM that if you want to get stronger or compete in powerlifting/oly lifting then GCG is what I would recommend due to their much more vast experience and equipment. As for triathlons it seems majority are choosing ocean fitness due to a quality pool and coaching. So that's nothing to do with WF or CF, so off your high horse please like a good lad

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 168 ✭✭Stillweak

I have a problem with the price too, but in Dublin where its well over twice the 75 charged by these guys. 75 seems very fair for a crossfit service, althought I will have to check the time table.
I mentioned triathlions as an example of something that is not crossfit, just like body building is not crossfit. You have missed my analogy. My apologies if I didnt explain that very well.
Not on a high horse. I just dont like unfair comments ripping apart a business before it even starts.
And lastly, '' like a good lad ''. Wow, incredible immature way of getting the last word in. If you cant have a discussion, you can have the last word.

They have it down as €50 for 10 classes per month - I presume this would be enough if it was purely the crossfit style training sessions I was interested in (supplemented by plenty of homework, runs, swims etc.)?
I've never gotten anything worthwhile out of the usual NRG / Kingfisher type gym experience and this sounds like it could be the right sort of training for me. Might give it a go!

It would for most coz people on average will only go 2/3 times per week in a gym. The thing is a lot of people will think they can get free classes in a gym plus facilities of gym/pool. The likes of NRG now have TRX and kettlebell classes making them a lot more appealing to males especially. All depends on how good the instructors are I suppose and the level of intensity. It's getting so much more competitive and I think nearly every gym in galway will offer you some sort of deal

More importantly a gym is what you make of it.

All the gyms mentioned have there strong suits and weakness. But really all are pretty good quality and reasonable value. I find most people who complain about gyms. Really are at fault themselves. Ive being a member of both GCG and kingfisher and found them both great.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,589 ✭✭✭JJayoo

Hopefully once they suss out the market the price might come down.
More importantly a gym is what you make of it.

Excellent point. Recently I have been using Peak gym, 150 euro for 13months can't complain.

There is so much potential in that gym.

On a side note the current 12 month price is 199, 149 for students. I have two free vouchers for 50 euro of the normal 199 price. If anyone wants them PM me.

Think they have a 13 month for the price of 12 deal at the moment.

Not true IMO. If WF are smart they'll try and partner with the triathlon clubs. Just take a look at the CFE site. IMO, CF is a good way of cross training for triathlon and a myriad of other sports.

I have to agree with d-gal on this one, its way to expensive for a gym in Galway. Just because it has a crossfit tag associated with it it doesn't mean anything, I can get a crossfit style workout done on a Saturday morning in NRG or kingfisher NUIG when the place is empty and I pretty much have the free weights area free to myself. NRG was only 300 for 12 months aswell so a steal in comparison to WF.

If they brought there rates down a bit they could do really well but I really can't see them lasting, it's a shame as Galway really needs a change in its attitude to fitness, a treadmill and bicep curl doesn't equate to keeping fit!
