    Hey
Just wondering does anyone know what I do here pleaaaase. I lost my provisional (which I have with 8-9 years) and now I have realised that it was also out of date. I know its stupid but I had a death in my family and I just completley forgot about it till I needed to renew my insurance. I went online to apply for the full test but I need my licence number, which I dont have as licence is lost.... Now I have no licence but dont know how to go about sorting this out...
Any one help me please.... There is probably an easy solution or maybe not

Should I go to the gaurds and report it lost then may be head to the licencing department and see if they could give me my old licence number. But is this possible?????

How do I get the old licence number to apply for my full test???

How long can your licence be expired and still apply for full test???

Can anyone offer some advise please???

Provisional licences are only valid for 2 years so how have you managed to have one for 8-9 years?

Also if your licence has expired there is no point getting insurance as it will be invalid anyway.

    hi,

I first got my licence about 8-9 years ago, so do not need to complete theory test (thats what I meant)..
I have had two failed full test previously...

Any ideas on how I should go forward here???
    Thanks

Get a new learners permit in the usual manner. When you get that, apply for your insurance & test.

AFAIK you will have to apply for the test(if you didnt sit it in the last 12 months of the licence),and provide written confirmation of having done so before they will issue with a new provisional and that will only be issued for 1 year.

    Not true.

Your insurance certificate will state you must have, or had, the licence you claim and must not be endorsed. You do not need a current licence to be insured.

I would guess you don't have any licence number to find, it's been so long.

Start from scratch. Apply for your learner's permit. (No such thing as a provisional licence any more)

Get the mandatory lessons, do the proper training, and get a full licence as soon as possible.

Fair enough then but you still need a licence to drive on the road...so insurance is still pointless.

There isn't any relevance to when it went out of date unfortunatly.

As for trying to answer your endlessy reposted question. I doubt any licencing body will give you the number of your expired licence as its now terminated.

If you've let it expire, then I'd imagine your going to have to apply for a new learners permit under the new scheme, i.e exam first, then learner licence, then whatever amount of instructor training is needed under the new system before you can go out in your own car...with a fully licenced driver with you at all times.

All this meaning(although if you've been on a provisional for 8 years I doubt it'll stop you driving) that you won't need insurance on your own car for a while.

go to your tax office with proof of identification and they will provide you with your licence number...they might not give you a licence until you book your test and show them proof of this but they will have no problem giving you your licence number.

    Hope this helps

You should be able to get the garda to fill in that your lost your license, and re-apply from there, a few months out of date shouldn't (I've had someone apply who's previous was 2 months expired, and there was no issue at all) require you to start from scratch and go through the pain of theory + mandatory lessons that you've probably taken already, albeit, unofficially.

Just call your local Motor Tax Office (MTO). Tell them your name and date of birth, and why you're looking for the number. They may just ask you to confirm your address and/or some other related information about you, but there should be no problem giving it to you, even over the phone.

The only real exception to that would be newer staff who simply aren't aware of the following fact: Your driver number is not confidential information. It simply exists as a convenient means for the MTO (and the Gardai) to find your licence records, but they don't actually need it to do so, as the same record can be found using your name and date of birth (and/or a combination of other additional known information about you).

Even if "someone else" does have your driver number, they can't do anything with it (because, while the MTO will give you the driver number if you provide them with your personal details, they WON'T give out personal details if you provide them with a number).

    Regards,
    John.
