Focus 2.0L TDCI starting niggle

I have a 2008 Focus TDCI. It is a face lift version with the 2.0L engine.

Occasionally when I try to start the car (normal conditions 8 -12deg C), the engine will almost fire up after about 2-3 cranks then it will keep cranking over with nothing happening.

I leave go of the key and give another go at starting it. This time it fires up instantly.

I have searched the internet on this issue but haven't come across anything.

Any ideas what is causing this?

    Glowplugs?

Not 100% sure if its the glow plugs.

Started the car one cold morning three weeks ago where it was -1deg C and started up first time.

I am thinking maybe a crank or cam sensor?

I have a similar starting problem with my petrol focus. I taught it was a starter motor problem. On further research into what it could be I've discoverd the trottle is sticking. To remedy I press in the accelerator pedal before starting. It starts every time now without fail. I'm going to have a go at cleaning her at some stage though. I had already changed the crank position sensor as I was sure it was the cause.

There is an air valve in these that give trouble. It serves two functions.
    1) It closes to assist EGR.
2)It closes to the help the engine stop quicker when you turn off the key.

Its a bit like a petrol throttle flap. Have ye got any MAF faults?
