Meditation

Can anyone recommend any type of meditation, books about meditation or any related info on meditation in regards to non spiritual just generally mental well being type meditation ?.

When you search for info on meditation it generally comes with spiritual explanations or some such stigma attached. I suppose I'm just after techniques to relax the mind or body and wanting to stay well away from aligning my chakras or whatever they imply with spiritual based material as the fact that I dont agree with any of that detracts from how serious I can take it and affects what I can get out of it..

You could check out this book. Only skimmed it myself, but it's on the to-read list.

Then you're talking about hypnosis. I don't think you can meditate without incorporating some spiritual aspect of it.

As a certified hypnotist, I think of meditation in a different way to those who take a more spiritual approach to it.

Meditation is merely self-hypnosis in action. It's disengaging your conscious mind (which is responsible for logical, rational and analytical thinking) so that your unconscious mind is free to basically "re-boot". This is why it's so good for relieving stress.

Your mind is basically freed up from all other conscious distractions to come up with new insights, new ideas and solutions to existing problems.

Spiritual people refer to it as "enlightenment". I think of it as the power of your unconscious mind, which is essentially unlimited.

You could be right. So I'm fighting a somewhat losing battle trying to find secular meditation material because what I'm actually talking about is self hypnosis techniques ?

Meditation is just self hypnoses described and practised in a spiritual way ?

Have a look at www.getsomeheadspace.com. It might be along the lines you're thinking of. Gets mentioned in the Gwuardian quite a bit.

You could look into a mind modulator

There are many different kinds of modulators (aka brain machines). Something like this http://www.mindmodulations.com/Laxman-Light-Sound-Mind-Machine.html, can get very expensive ones. They are basically light and sound machines that can alter brain waves (alpha, beta, theta) through different programs. You can also develop your own programs. Is basically condensing years of meditation into a series of programs. I have been using them for a long time. Can be pretty uncomfortable until you get used to them.

Should not be used if you have a history of mental illness. Also all documentation states that they should not be used while under the influence of mind altering chemicals but that could be taken with a pinch of salt
