    Hi -
We have a Potterton Suprima wall-mounted gas boiler. It's about 12 years old. Will upgrading the boiler to a new one be of benefit at all?
    Thanks.

Yes, a modern hi-efficiency boiler will average 10-15% lighter on fuel
Look at your gas bill for heating, and see how long it would take to pay back the installation cost at 10% of your bill

SEI have grants for some upgrade work - might include boilers, google sustainable energy ireland ...:)

you mean SEAI, they rebranded themselves, must have too much money!

there is a grant, but you need to upgrade your heating controls aswell as the boiler, an possible savings could be up to 30%

Thanks. Will check into the re-branded SEAI and also my bills. 10% saving would take a while to pay-back but guess would be worth it in the long run with the price of gas going up.

Hi, wondering if you upgraded your Gas Boiler, if you did did you see much savings etc

I have the same boiler and i too am thinking of upgrading to a new more efficient Boiler. Also wondering if you dont mind the cost involved

    Thanks in advance

If you have a suprema , the best thing you could do is get rid of it , they are probably the worst boiler ever made , if you decide to keep stock up on a pcb board or two , , if you do decide to replace your boiler i wouldn't expect to see any savings on fuel bills by simply replacing a boiler cb, you would need to do a couple of other things such as flushing your system , fitting a magnetic filter and upgrading controls .

Hi there, Afraid not is the answer. We priced it and got a good quote from a guy in Tallaght. However we could not get a good gauge on how much it might improve efficiency so we reckoned it would take over 5 years to pay off if not more so we did not go ahead. However with our recent bill we might reconsider!
    Good luck.

    Hi,

I used to have a Potterton boiler - also about 10-15 years old. I got rid of it last summer and installed an Ariston. I also installed TRVs and added cavity wall pumped installation.

I was going over my gas bills last week to see whether I should switch or not :) and decided to compare the changes from last year.

Anyway for Aug 2010 - Apr 2011 I used 1435 units and for Aug 2011 - Apr 2012 I used 990 units. I figured it was about 200 euro cheaper. Much more important to me was that the house is now much cosier.

Even though this winter was mild compared to last I was much less disciplined with the heating this year compared to previous years - more rads on for longer. An added benefit is I now also get power showers direct from the boiler at mains pressure biggrin.gif I also calculated that the electric shower running cost was 10x the shower driven direct from the boiler.
