I thought this was going to be a rant about how Olive Green is "soooo last season!"

Who comes up with this nonsense? =/

Nicotine addiction is a powerful thing. If they think that changing the color of packaging is going to cause people to just quit then they're seriously deluded.

is it supposed to stop people from smoking? because it wont.

I think it is to do with discouraging teens to start smoking

"If this legislation stops one young Australian from picking up a shiny, coloured packet and prevents them becoming addicted to cigarettes then in my view it will have been worthwhile

So they think teenagers start smoking because the boxes look shiny?

Maybe there is something in this, when I first started I choose Marlboro Red because of the iconic branding.

So, research shows that green is the colour they hope will stop smokers, so they assume smokers don't care about (as much about) the cost, any health risks, teeth colouring, hands + clothes smelling of smoke or whatever .. the colour of the cigarette boxes will stop them from buying cigarettes?
The companies do have a point, they shouldn't have to abandon their logos and branding for this. Also, how's someone going to know which cigarettes they're really buying - I'm sure a lot of them prefer some over others. This also lets shop owners buy whatever ones they want (likely sub-par ones) and sell them at an average price, likely much more than what they've payed for them.

It's more about the lack of any discerning branding or associated colour schedule, which are supposedly big factors in people starting smoking.
An across the board drab box does away with that... apparently.

I think its a good idea. It would make them less appealing to teenagers. I smoke silkcut blue and they recently brought out packaging with pics of different seasons on them. The also have slims that come in a tiny silver square pack. I think that kind of packaging would definitely appeal more, to teenage girls especially.
