Posting this for a friend who has had their car taken by a house mate who may have already left the country. The guy in question I believe has a good heart and everything but has been faced with a few challenges and may have gotten to a stage where they felt they just had to leave their current situation. He took the car at 3 in the morning (2 nights ago), the car is worth f**k all, a 2001 Red Suzuki Alto, 01d79167.

I haven't a clue where it could be, possibly abandoned around the airport, ferry ports (he's from the UK so maybe wanted to go back), or maybe he still has it and has gone more remote with it.

The gardai have been notified and came around this morning to ask for a picture for their "missing persons" report, which struck me a bit strange since he's an adult, voluntarily left, left a note stating so and hasn't been reported as missing as such.

Anyway, thought I'd try help out by posting it here:

I understand that your mate had to notify the Gardai for insurance reasons etc. But did he make clear to the Gardai that he feels the guy is depressed / has mental problems, and is not just a common thief? Might give them an edge in finding this lad before he does damage to someone or something...

Thanks for the reply, yeah they've told the Gardai alright, he left a note saying sorry and that he'd return it as soon as possible too. It's just strange the way it happened, hasn't been any word on it since either, I'm sure they could easily check ferry sailings etc for the reg but haven't appeared to have done so yet.

Car was found in a shopping centre car park in Co. Down with the man in question asleep in it. He is in custody at present as far as I know. The owner was given the keys and told they could simply go to collect it in the car park and drive it back. They went all the way to Down today and couldn't find it in the car park, rang the Gardai again and were told it had been taken, they had to pay €180 to get it back, that doesn't seem right :(

that's a fúckin joke..you'd think they'd at least exempt stolen cars from that charge.

I don't think it's the PSNI, they subcontract recovery work out and it's that company which charges the car owners otherwise they don't get paid. In most UK cities, the police won't leave a stolen car where it was found for the owner to retrieve, they usually always get a tow truck out, and charge the owner for the privilege. It's harsh but I can kinda understand the logic.
