I might as well change the thread title since everyone has listed more than one singer :).
I posted my favourite singers here:

If I had to pick some vocalists whose style I admire, top of the list would be Burton C. Bell of Fear Factory, Jon Howard of Threat Signal and Anders Fríden of In Flames for men and Amy Lee of Evanescence and Tarja Turunen (formerly of Nightwish) for women.

Honourable mentions too for Annie Lennox and Kyoko Baertsoen of Lunascape.

John Grant. His song Outer Space is one of my favourite of all time. Bleedin' rapid.

He has one of the smoothest and sweetest voices i've ever heard. His lyrics are genius.

There's a live version of the Queen of Denmark from the Stoneroom sessions where his voice peaks and its one of the most beautiful things i've ever heard. Brings an old tear to the eye.

I've seen him three times this year, once with a backing band and twice with just himself and a pianist. You couldnt meet a more humble man. He's an absolute 100% gent and a soft endearing soul.

Here's a few that stand out to me:
    - Suzanne Vega
    - Peter Gabriel
    - Kate Bush
    - Jon Anderson
    - Nanci Griffith
    - Bono (when he takes risks e.g. Achtung Baby / Zooropa)
    - the girls from ABBA when they were on form (e.g. Super Trouper, One Of Us)

I can't stand any of these current singers who use histrionics to mask the fact that they can't hold a note. Don't get me started on AutoTune™.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

Not necessarily my favourite artists but some of the best vocalists.....

THEN: Roy Orbison, Elvis Costello, Billy Joel, Karen Carpenter, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon

NOW: Beyonce, John Mayer, Justin Nozuka, Bon Iver, Pink (surprisingly good live)

No one will be more delighted than me when the X-Factor or The Voice discovers a "new" Roy Orbison. (Not holding my breath!).

And check out Elvis Costello with Burt Bacharach - "This House is Empty Now".

Thought I'd throw a few more into the mix - my favourite singers are those with unique voices and not necessarily technically great singers - people like

    - Bob Dylan - listen to Blind Willie McTell on the Bootleg Series vol 1-3 if you think he can't sing

    - Neil Young - amazing feeling in his vocals - check Stringman from the Unplugged album

    - James Taylor - his phrasing is unique, and along with his band, it's as much about what's left out as what's put in - like on this one Enough to be on your way

    - Suzanne Vega - really evocative voice full of longing and loss, like on Harbor Song

And a million more, like Joni Mitchell, Eddie Vedder, Neil Finn, Bjork, Paul Simon, Lou Reed, Thom Yorke, Crosby Stills & Nash, Nick Drake, Elliott Smith, Beth Orton, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Nicks etc. etc.
