Constantly sick

    Hey everyone,

I am currently running, swimming and playing hockey and finding it hard to fit it all in. I am also in my final year in college so have limited time in evenings.

Just when i seem to be getting on track and do what i want to be doing, i get a cold or sore throat and have to take time off. The colds dont just last a few days either, i am just back from two weeks off. And even if i dont "feel" sick, my glands are swollen so dont want to train too hard.

I am taking vitamin C tablets, and also iron tablets with the last couple of weeks. Before that i was tired all the time, even after 10 hours sleep. The iron tablets seem to be helping with this.

It's driving me mad that I have to take time off so often, and dont feel I am reaching my full potential.

Anyone with any advice, would be much appreciated!
    Thanks in advance,
    Normad.

Have you seen your doctor? Had blood tests done? Swabs taken?

If the symptoms are similar or the same each time it would suggest you're not recovering properly and just keep relapsing. Might be worth taking extra time off next time and letting yourself recover fully before starting to train again.

Bloods are normal, didnt even suggest i am low in iron. Symtoms are never too bad, just enough to stop me training.

Same thing kept happening to me, every time I was a bit run down from too much training I felt wiped out, headachey and generally crappy. Turns out I was getting tonsillitis every time I was run down. Got those bad boys removed and problem is 100% gone. Are your tonsils enlarged at all? (is that a gross question?)

if your bloods are normal why are you taking extra iron? I would only take iron if your doc told oyu too and he hasn't so i cant see the benefit. also how is your diet? With all the training your doing you need to make sure you take extra care how you eat, it can have a big effect

We do not give out medical advice. Injuries may have common symptoms but are unique to the individual - just because you were able to keep training with X injury or were out for months because of Y doesn't mean that the same will apply to someone else. Bad advice given here and followed through could aggravate an injury and prevent an athlete making a full recovery in as rapid a time as possible. This restriction is Boards-wide and purposely heavy-handed. So don't feel offended if your thread about a sprained ankle (which you may deem "non-medical") gets locked.
