I'm fed up with the speakers that came in the car. Turn them up too loud and it's feedback and crackling.

What would be involved in putting a couple of good speakers in?
Is it possible to just buy speakers and hook them up to the existing car stereo?
How much is normally charged for wiring them up?
The dash board is an all in one jobbie, is that a problem?

Depending on the rating of the head unit, you should just be able to swap the speakers. Don't get speakers that exceed the wattage of the head unit. There may be a few gotchas along the way depending on your car.

The type of speaker setup is a biggish one: some cars use a single speaker per location for all audio ranges, while others have a separate tweeter and woofer. If it's the latter setup, you'll need component speakers and a crossover unit. If it's the former, I'd suggest coaxial speakers.

Physical size is the next thing: aftermarket tend to come in a selection of sizes, 100mm, 125mm, and 150mm are common iirc. The OE speakers in your car may be a little different, which means you might have some cutting/fabrication to do to make aftermarket ones fit.

Like the previous poster said, chances are there's some sort of tutorial/howto online for your car. Have a look around.

The wattage isn't very important, it's mainly a marketing gimmick unless you're buying expensive stuff. Cheaper manufacturers usually take the RMS, multiply by the sum of the planets in the solar system, add the amount of days in August, and if it's still less than their competitors, double it. Take these for example. RMS is 20W (the important number), yet peak is claimed to be 150W?

The impedance is far more important, this needs to match your original speakers so that it matches your head unit's amp. Not matching these will overheat your amp and give crap sound. If the OEM speakers sound crap I assume they're just standard full-range speakers. These can definitely be improved on, but they'll never sound as good as a component system.
