Ok a direct debit is where a comany has authorisation to debit your account.

You could possibly setup a Standing Order but unsure if the banks do this to foreign banks. Otherwise you could set up the Canadian bank account as a beneficiary on your online banking and do transfer as you wish.

Have a look at tranzfers.com. They will transfer for a fee of £7 and give a better rate than banks will.

I'd recommend XETrade.com which I used to transfer Euros to the US.

Very good rate but also because the funds were transferred to a Euro account in the UK first and were then wired to the US account. Means that you pay nothing for the transaction fee (AIB) as it's within the EU, rather than their standard charge.

Whole process took three business days.

Standing orders systems is generally not set up to process foreign transfers.
