Was there this time last month, lovely city. Are you flying into Skavsta or Arlanda? It is quite an expensive place but there are great places to eat at reasonable prices also. Gamla Stan is a lovely place to walk around for a few hours.

Flying to Skavsta and taking the train up from Nykoping. Staying in Gamla Stan as it seems to be central to everywhere I need to go...Have heard its a bit on the expensive side, but as you say there are always some reasonable places to be found if you have a wander.... Any recs appreciated. :)

I hope you've planned to visit the islands off the citys archipelago.
Amazing islands like sandhamn, finnhamn, Moja and others. Very popular summer destinations for the swedes themselves... not sure if they go during winter? Even still, a ferry trip around th islands is well worth it. There's plenty on the web about them.

Check out the Skansen Heritage style park too. I'd avoid eating in Gamla Stan. Its pretty much the tourist trap of the city. Still lovely to walk around though.

haven't considered the islands as yet but will definitely have a look if I free up some time. Have the heritage village pencilled in and also was also contemplating on buying the Stockholm Card for at least a day. Is it worth it?

I took the bus from Skavsta, about 80 minutes. I'm sure the train is pretty much the same.

I just walked around the city for the few days I was there, I was staying in Kungsholmen which isn't too far from Gamla Stan but there is little of interest there, it's largely a residential area. I did the Vasa museum which is interesting enough, spent about an hour there.

The subway/train system is very good, might be worth getting a ticket for the week. I didn't use it until the last day and regretted that in the end.

Didn't get it myself, but I'm sure it might save you a bit if you've a lot planned.
Lots of great shops there too... the people are so fashionable. It's like walking around a fashion catalogue city!
The Vasa museum is worth a visit too. V interesting story.
A day trip to Uppsala might be worthwhile?
It's such a lovely clean and safe city. Be sure to walk around plenty as it's most enjoyable.

It is unbelievable, it really is. I couldn't believe it. You won't see anyone walking around in pyjamas, that's for sure.

yeah, bizarrely enough, I get that impression from most of the Swedish websites I've visited. All clean lines and ultra functional. Looking forward to the Vas, I must say. Will be attending a couple of musical events whilst I'm there, so that will be fun too...:D

Where are they on? I was in the Globe Arena for hockey matches two of the nights I was there, great venue. There's a lift that goes to the top of the globe and offers a great view of the city too.

The SkyWalk? I think I'll have a look at that alright. Stockholm Concert Hall, Kagelbanan and the Munchen Bryggeriet are the venues. Look great too...:D

    oh SkyView.....

Skansen's worht a visit alright, could easily spend half a day there. The nearby Vasa Museum was interesting too

Metro system is brilliant - we spent ages trying to work out when the last train was, then discovered it's 24 hour. Never waited more than 3 minutes for a train, except at about 2am and even then they're every ten mins or so.

Didn't find it madly expensive 2 years ago - given the prices some Dublin pubs are still charging, it's only a slight step up.

I was there two weeks ago(my second time).

As others have said The VASA is a must see.
Also the Icebar in the nordic sea hotel (beside central train station)is worth a visit.
The Gondolen bar is worth visiting at night for the views (but it can get a bit packed).
Galma Stan the old town, and Sofo (their temple bar)are well worth visiting.
The ferry trips are worth doing ,as stockholm is made up of 14 islands.

Drink in restaurants is expensive,up to €10 for a glass of wine, but local beers/ciders is not too bad.

Thoroughly enjoyed my week in Stockholm. Museumed out at this stage....:) I got the Stockholm card for two days {6O euro} and it more than paid for itself with visits to over ten museums and public transpost taken care of. I was impressed by the city on many levels but one in particular stood out. The 'System Bolaget', looks like something that works and could or should be adopted here and in the UK.

Many thanks to posters for your hints and tips.....

I think I have Stockholm Syndrome today, as I have been captivated by its Scandic charm this past week....;)

    Tack.
