It might not be the answer you're looking for, but you could get a GPS with maps from openstreetmap. I've yet to find a campsite that this guy (http://www.archiescampings.eu/view/) doesn't have in his database.

And if you can point it at opencyclemap.org instead you'll get contours too...

    This chap:

sells cards with opencyclemap for various regions pre-installed. Should work with the Legend HCx. And, there should be enough space on the card to download Archie's camping database onto it too.

Ordnance Survey Road atlas. Has the info you are looking for.
Photocopy the pages you need and put them in a polypocket.

+1 on contours! Very important from a touring point of view, last thing you want when you're knackered some day is for a 'shortcut' to turn into a grueling ascent!

Haven't tested them myself, but they should suffice for what you're attempting.

I tend to use the OSI discovery series maps, as they give good contours and detail, albeit a bit bulky in paper format. They're available from different providers electronically here, though I'm still using the now obsolete TrailMaster versions of this mapping.

I had a look at the OpenCycleMap stuff, and it is excellent for free, but is missing a fair amount of small rural L-Roads you see on the discovery series, which are as often as not the roads I want to check out. Quo looks good for a freebie based on OSI data, but I haven't tried it yet. I'll stick up another post once I've tried it out.

Edit: Just downloaded Quo, software is free but you still have to buy the OSI data, €1.92 for a 50k tile. Not particularly impressed with the browser, might give a few of the other ones supporting OSI data a go.

The thing about OpenStreetMap / OpenCycleMap is that they're free in all senses of the word. Free to use but also free to edit. It's down to users like you to add to the map. Take your GPS with you on an exploratory spin / drive, upload it to OSM and draw the routes. Then it will be there for others to use. I recently added this set of minor roads...

Have a read of the OSM guides to see how you can help...

i don't have a fixed date as yet but kinda thinking late may,if i end up doing it on my own i would wait until i seen a good week of weather :D:D, i intend doing 50/60 miles a day , thinking now of skipping northern ireland and taking a sharp right for Dublin somewhere along the route.but i'll see how im going before i make any big decisions wing it as the man said.
