    Hi Folks,

Yes as the title suggests I think I have got the marathon bug. I recently started running again 3 days a week anything up to an hour and as a favour to a mate I ran in the last 8 miles of the marathon at 9 min mile pace to help him achieve his aim of under 4hrs.

I really enjoyed the run in and the great support. Now I think I would love to try the real thing. I'm not exactly built for running at 6ft 4 and 17 stone and can plod along but dont have much speed. Basically can people guide me as to what I should do for the next 6 months before embarking on a marathon schedule?

Aim would be a sub 4hr DCM 2012

    Thanks
    Kev.

you could have a look in on this thread (read down a bit) where ecoli is putting together a training plan for 5-10k racing. That would take you to Jan/Feb, then maybe train for a half marathon, and start marathon training in June? There'll be another novice marathoners mentored thread by then.

The main thing is to run consistently from now until you start the marathon training. 3/4 times a week, every week.

Very difficult to keep focus over a 12 month period, so you should aim to have lots of interim goals.

Enter some races over the next while to give an idea of where you're at in terms of fitness and race pace. For example, you could run the Aware 5 mile in Phoenix Park in mid-December and use your time from that to set a goal for the Raheny 5 mile at the end of January, which will give you a good 6 weeks of training to build on. Then keep trying to improve in 5 mile and 10k races during the Spring. Going into marathon training with a good 10k base pays huge dividends.

Also, no reason why you should limit yourself to sub-4. Too far out to talk about marathon goals, you may find that you could run faster than that.

You have a full year to train. If you can genuinely already run 8 miles at 4 hours pace at your size, set yourself a goal to run 3.30 at least next year.

    Hi Guys,
not wanting to hijack the thread but i am going to throw my hat in the ring for the DCM2012 also. Started in the summer riding just to get fit and lose weight. progressed into football training and coaching and I am toning up nicely and the fitness levels have increased with this.

On the back of this i have wanted to run a marathon for a long while, its been a bug, So now i am committing to run the 2012DCM.

If anyone lives in Ashbourne and is looking for a running buddy then let me know.

BTW - Good luck to kevgaa in hitting your goals.

    Hi Folks,

Ok so first mini goal in my quest is the Raheny 5 mile in Jan. First 5 miler so good news is it will be a PB :)

As I'm completely new to this any ideas on a training plan. I see Hal Higdon mentioned a lot of maybe follow his 8 or 10k plans. I assume the novice plan?

Now where to get entry for the 5 miler. Nothing like entry to focus the mind and training.

as I said above, ecoli is running a training plan for the Raheny 5 (or similar distances around that time) in this thread.

Race entry doesn't seem to be open yet, keep an eye on the Raheny site

    The phrase
go on without me, save yourselves

springs to mind for some reason...
