Another failed emissions thread!

I brought a 99 Focus to NCT in July of this year. It failed on tyres, front window not working and worn track arm. Got these things sorted but not within a month so last I week I brought it for another test. It failed on emissions (low idle). I don't really understand emissions etc so here's what the printed report said:-

    Engine Oil temp - 115 C
    Low idle CO 0.57 vol%

The limit for the year of manufacture is 0.50%.

I checked the report for the test in July and the emissions at that stage were 0.32.

I'm not sure if it matters but I have another car and the Focus has been more or less sitting around for the last month. When I drove it to the NCT it had been parked outside for almost a week. Somebody mentioned that this would make a difference and also that I should have driven the car hard before the test.

On searching this forum and others I've come across a prodcut called Dipetane. Would this be of any use?

I'm hoping to sell the car and I'd rather not have to drop it back and pay more to a mechanic if there is a cheaper option that I can do myself.

What type and size engine is it? Petrol, diesel, 1.4/1.6/1.8/2.0?
