Considering changing the car from a 2001 1.4 golf to 2005/6 1.6 golf. I know first hand all the issues with the 1.4 engine, no power in it at all and drinks oil, and that the 1.6 was far superior on the mk4. Is the same to be said for the mk5 or did vw get their act together with it?

To be honest I dont really need the extra bhp as its 95% city driving, but just wondering how the two compare with regards to reliability, mpg etc..

    Any input appreciated..

In a MK2 LEON I was averaging about 30-32MPG overall. Same size and running gear. Be wary though - gearbox bearings go in a lot of them. Engine itself is rock solid.

Big difference in power between the two alright, 1.4 had 79bhp and 1.6 has I think 115bhp?Thats 35-36 extra horsepower which is quite significant. 1.4 is gutless.

The FSI had 113bhp but the old 8v had 102. The FSI is very rared in this country whereas the 8v is plentiful. Apart from being a but thirsty the 8v isn't bad for what it is.
