Another option to look at if you are interested. Last time I was in the states we bought 2 prepaid cell phones for about 20 dollars each. They could only call and receive from each other and had a few hundred minutes on them. They lasted for the entire time we were there, approx a month.
We still had our mobiles but this saved us a fortune when we were out, we were 8 people and seemed to always go off in 2 groups and each group took a phone.

+1 The phone will scan all of the frequencies it supports (850/900/1800/1900) when you arrive in the US and it will pick the strongest signal. You can't manually select a particular frequency on a Nokia, the phone looks after that for you.

Or buy a pre-paid SIM card when you get there and put it in your phone, save you a fortune in data roaming and texts etc.
