Channel 5, Five USA and Fiver are now on Astra 1n. Looks like they will all be going free to air soon, as promised by Channel Five earlier this year.

They can be found on 10964H 22000 SR
There is also a spare label 7720 which is probably in preparation for Five+1

Don't think 5HD will be fta in the forseeable future, Sky have them tight.

Think they have some problem with us, remember them saying they have no intention of ever being on the Irish EPG.

Maybe if Sky offer them a sweetener they might appear. Also 10.964 H is a copy of 12.422 H astra 2a i think. So when scanning 10.964 H the Sky Box locks onto 12.422 H for some reason. When 12.422 shuts down hopefully all the Channel 5 channels will go FTA on astra 1n.

Aye, that's right. Though, now that it's under new ownership, you never know... though I still wouldn't hold my breath :)

When did they make that announcement? Nothing on Join Freesat about it.

5 and its channels will never be on Irish EPG, channel 5 has claimed several times in the past that they have no interest in every being available to Ireland. So other channels is the only option. Similiar story for ITV and it's channel except it's TV3 thats stopping ITV over here.

Get a Freesat HD box (or a Sky HD box that has UK EPG without card, few do though) for UK TV.

I remember ITV4 was on the Irish EPG for a while. A mistake obviously but it lasted a while.

Posters on Digital Spy have been told by five directly. Obviously there's no way of 100% confirming that, as they're still only posts on the internet. There was this story though http://www.ukfree.tv/fullstory.php?storyid=1107051910 Also Channel 5 +1. Doubt it'll be confirmed before they have done testing and have a launch date, but makes sense to be before Christmas. They're FTV at the moment, so their not getting sub money if I understand the sky sub system correctly - the lack of narrow beam capacity (not tied up by sky) was the problem.

If you have a Sky or Sky+ HD box with a UK FTV card, 7720 is now showing Channel 5+1. Not in the UK EPG yet. Available via Other Channels. Should be FTA soon enough.

    Channel 5 +1 will be on freesat on 6th december & 5* / 5 us on 8th december.

Excellent news, now we can move on to speculating when 5HD will go FTA :D

Freesat/ FTA is getting an ever better line up of channels. Hopefully the few remaining Freeview channels that are sub on satellite will consider it now there there is more narrow beam capacity.

It must also be reaching tipping point for sky news to pony up and go on the freesat epg.

    Maybe next July
No news yet on Channel 5 HD, but it is suspect their existing contract with Sky concludes in July 2012 when it will launch on both Freesat and Freeview.

Does this mean that the 5 family will become available through the other channels trick on Sky HD on the Sky EPG ?

Yes, the same way Channel 5 is available at present.

This is great news, i know many will complain that 5 is poor tv, but so is TV3, 3e and even Sky1 shows a lot of shÍté, but extra channels mean extra choice.
The odd good programme of interest is all we need on each channel (imo)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

Though if there was only 4 to 6 channels total, the choice would be between higher quality programs.

Ah no unfortunately I have a London card so CH5 doesn't appear on the EPG. I have to go through other channels to watch it unlike ITV and BBC 1 South East. i thought CH5 was going FTA though ?

All Five's family of channels excluding Five HD going free to air in next fortnight. Five HD expected to go FTA in July 2012. So the sky card trick will work with ch5 and your card from early next month. Just remember to tune in the new 5 frequencies first.

Hi Macy i think that opportunity might have been lost when News Corp blew its chance to be a majority stakeholder in bSKYb.?

between 5* and 5 USA there is even less reason to have many cable channels carried by UPC.

i wonder were this will all end?

I am not sure it has to end anywhere really.

I am not convinced that UPC and Sky are that worried about freesat/FTA in the Irish market and the growing number of channels available. They are probably more concerned about losing customers to each other.

Over the last couple of years I have told several people about Freesat at work. Of those:

    - two now have Freesat,
    - some are not interested 'cos "it's too good to be true/that will never last"
    - others seem happy to fork out for basic Sky or UPC cos they don't have an aerial for terrestrial and don't want the hassle
    - and a final category want the extra channels (sports, movies) that freesat can't offer so stick with Sky or UPC for that reason.
