2005 Golf Plus Engine problem

Hi folks virgin poster so please be gentle with me ;)I have a 2005 VW Golf Plus and while driving at a steady 70km/h last Thursday there was a large crack/bang from the engine and the car started to make a terrible noise and billow smoke.Diagnosis from the garage I had tow me is that the com rod on the no4 piston had sheared or buckled (cant remember which the stress was too much :) ) and has caused damage to the engine block. The guys in the garage are telling me that I will have to have the lower engine block replaced (apparently the engine in the Golf Plus comes in 2 parts) and that all in all the bill would be the best part of 4k. I am in Cork City area... obviously getting it repaired by a VW dealer is going to be the ultra expensive option.... but do you folks have any suggestions as to alternatives (i.e. recon engine) and any suggestions/ recommendations of good mechanics in the area that I should call?Any help greatly appreciated.

A secondhand engine would be the cheapest option but it may be difficult to find one.
