My windows xp computer shuts down randomly

    Hi can someone please help out for a solution my pc just shuts down and you need to turn the plug off via socket switch to get it to turn back on :( it's an old computer , I have a linux but I use my xp for other programs, somebody help ! :(

    Strange one, the fact that turning off power followed by turning it back on allows it too boot would suggest power supply to me, as if it was overheating I doubt turning the electricity on/off would sort it!

    Thanks for the reply nick, yes it is quite strange it seems when the system is opening software it struggles eg. I opened up spyware-search and destroy and it just went off, would you suggest trying it in different sockets of the house? Cheers Simon

    Hi Simon! Does the computer appear to be executing a "normal" shut down when this is happening? I.E. are you seeing similar results to a self initiated shut down?
    If this is the case your computer may be affected by the Blaster worm.

    Wouldn't hurt sure, it could be a power supply issue, they can cause the strangest of problems if not working right, I would reccomend trying another PSU in the machine and see how it goes

    no that's not the one, it just suddenly goes as if there was a loss of power, thanks for the reply though!

    The fact that you have to turn it off and on at the socket may indicate the switch on the PC is faulty. Or as yoyo said, the PSU.

    Thanks guys the psi was the problem I inspected the inside of the computer and a cable was half plugged in, how that happened , I dont know but it may have happened when it was being moved around
