Focus, accelerator stopped working on motorway

My partner just rang me there. She was driving on the motorway when the car started to slow down, and the accelerator would not do anything. The car was still running but the engine would not rev when the accelerator was pressed.

She pulled in, turned car off and on, and it seems to be working ok now.

Any ideas what could the problem be, and is it advisable she attempts to complete the journey?

Forgot to say, car is a 1.6 petrol ford focus, 2000.

common enough ford fly by wire throttle issue - its usually the position sensor in the pedal box. Turning off and then turning straight back on nearly always fixes it but its temporary and will re-occur with increasing frequency. Personally I live with it rather than go to the hassle of a main dealer repair, but it does tend to happen at the worst possible times-usually after letting the engine idle eg at lights etc. For the wife, you might be best to get it fixed.:)

That happened a few of the 1.4s years ago, a lad I shared an office with had awful problems getting Ford to diagnose it, his was under warranty back in the early 00s, heard one or two other cases of it happening too, all 1.4s though.

Happened to me on the M1 back from Belfast in a 1.4. Think it was 3-4 times. Each time just pulled in and restarted. Never happened again after that.

That is all very well but not relevant in this case as a 2000 1.6 Focus is not drive by wire.
