Cheating when eating Paleo

Hi everyone, I have been slowly trying to change my eating to a more paleo way of eating. My question is

What is the most important thing when eating paleo: wheat free, sugar free, no simple carbs?

Im eating it most of the time but then have a cheat day and may eat a bar of chocolate or have some jellies at the cinema.

Does it undo all my work if I cheat at all?

Loren Cordain says you must avoid:
    • refined sugars
    • refined grains
    • whole grains
    • refined oils
    • dairy products
    • legumes (pulses)
    • potatoes

    foods to eat:
    • fresh fruit
    • vegetables
    • lean meats
    • fish
    • seafood

I would say gluten, fructose and vegetable oils are the worst.

Rice and pototoes aren't too bad as far as I'm aware, though some paleo people say potatoes are fine.

In Cordains book he says diet soft drinks wouldn't be that bad if you cheated occasionally by having them.

I'm on a paleo diet except I do eat dairy and I've still noticed huge benefits.

Thanks, I was more wondering if I was to cheat what would be the worst. Thanks Scanlas. So anyone doing Paleo do you ever allow yourself a treat like regular chocolate/ a day off or would it hinder weight loss?

Provided it's not completely to excess, infrequent (ie a cheat meal 1x every 5-6 days, or a full cheat day every 10-14 days) AND you're following the rest of the diet correctly - no.

You probably WILL notice the negative effects of sugar/starch tho if you do cheat, which'd probably be good for you to see :)

I follow the 80:20 rule. I don't regularly cheat but if I do I make sure it's part of my 20%. To be honest after giving up chocolate I don't miss it. Try giving it up for thirty days. I used to Love chocolate. Not had a bar for 5 months. My treats now would be home made bread and beer( I know) but there you go

You know it does stand to reason that adopting a more of a Paleo diet is better for you considering that farming only came in the Neolithic (new Stone Age) Throughout the whole of the Paleolithic (old Stone Age) and the Mesolithic (middle Stone Age) human beings ate a Paleo diet. I know we are evolving and adapting to grains etc. but I guess we might not all be adapted to it yet.

I'd say if you still ate chocolate you would still notice a lot of weight loss but obviously better not to. Almond butter could be a good substitute for chocolate for you.

  • spoon of nut butter pressed into dessicated coconut and rolled into a ball. A perfectly paleo chocolate substitute that's nicer too imo...

I've literally just tried this to have with a cuppa, it's bloody amazing and I'd say it's gonna keep me sane without chocolate!

I used cashew butter and desicated coconut (the one you find in the baking aisle)

    Thanks Alejandro Victorious Visibility :D

  • no worries, half the fun in paleo is trying to find ways to enjoy it. Experiment with the flavours and the textures of "paleo foods" and you can find loads of ways to treat yourself.

Be a bit inventive instead of cheating, and don't be afraid of throwing things out that don't work!

    Pototoes are fine imo.
But they aren't Paleo. They are one of the ways that the idea of paleo is bent in order to make it user friendly.

I'd say they are pretty good alright.
But watch the cals. Can get high. Paelo is a health diet, not a weight loss diet. You still need to eat under maintenance, and nut butters can un-do this.

Oh I know they're seriously high but I would quite often have a spoon of nut butter as one of my meals if I'm in a hurry so this just makes it even tastier and easier to have ready made in a little lunch box :D

(oh and I'm not on full paleo anyway, just very similar to it)
